A little more info: This show begins running this Sunday. The PPV fee to order it is $19.95. That price seems a little steep, but Quidam is currently NOT available at your local video store, but instead is premiering on PPV. Quidam will be released on VHS a few months from now and will sell for under $30. John, You're right. It isn't the same on TV as it is in person. I saw it in person from the front row. And I've seen bits and pieces all day long on pay per view. As you've hears a gazillion times, any Cirque production is great from any seat, but various seats give various perspectives. Sitting on the front row, I did not appreciate the under the floor lighting.
What you may not realize from the TV show is that it is done in a very small tent out in a parking lot. The seating area is only about 20 rows deep. It's a very up close and personal show. Even the highest heights, are not all that high.
A huge advantage of the video version is that it is taken from all the possible angles, and probably spliced in such a way to give the best perspective for any given act. The disadvantage is that several different things are going on at any given moment, and the camera is only showing you one view at a time.
I suspect the show has about 3 hours worth of acts. They only use about 2 hours worth of act in each live performance. I think some actors get certain days off, and they use other acts to fill in. Sort of a rotating basis. When I saw it, they did not have the little Chineese girls in Tin Man uniforms. I specifically remember seeing the props they use for sale in the gift shop tent, and wondered how it would be used in the show. They never showed up. From talking to other people who saw it live, there were lots of differences in the segments we all saw.
I'm glad I saw it live. And the new Cirque show will be coming to Dallas next year, which is kewl. I'll probably buy the video of Quidam when it comes out, just because. But it was a completely different show than what I saw live.
