A new section of Lakeshore Drive, moved closer to the shores of Lake Mead, will open for sightseers Saturday.

Not all of Las Vegas' new road projects are meant to compensate for excess traffic.

Some, like a chunk of road opening Saturday, are intended to tickle the senses.

A 2 1/2-mile stretch of Lakeshore Drive is being moved closer to Lake Mead, offering better views and scenic pullouts.

The two-lane road was 22 feet wide with no shoulders. The new road is 24 feet wide with 4-foot shoulders.

Although there will be no designated bike path along the wider road, bikers, joggers and walkers will be able to use the shoulders to cruise the road and soak in the scenery.

The old road eventually will become part of the River Mountain Loop hiking trail. The trail, although not yet complete, will remain paved and eventually wind into Henderson and around Boulder City.

I think this is a GREAT idea!! This is the only route I take to get to the Hoover Dam.
