I went to see Rich Little last night a The Golden Nugget. They have a pretty nice showroom on the third floor. It is old Vegas style with low ceilings. The theater seats are pretty comfortably with cup holders. There is a bar, restroom, and gift shop just outside of the showroom and you come and go as you please.
Rich Little was pretty good. For me, that type of show is well past it's day in the sun. It's a gimmick and Rich does it well. He does it much better than Danny Gans and much better than Larry G Jones. I haven't shamed myself into seeing Gordy Brown yet. I've never been a fan of impersonators anyway, but since Rich was the first to perfect this gimmick, I wanted to see him.
Rich can use facial expressions and voice changes with just a few props here and there to imitate someone. A lot of the others can do that too. Rich is very good about using that imitation to tell a joke related to that person or period of time. Larry Jones mainly uses catch phrases the person is popular for. That's how he gets to use so many voices in one show. And Danny Gans mainly tries to imitate the most popular 15 seconds of the most popular song by that person. So Rich is different in that when he changes into a person, you don't really know what he will say.
I don't know how old Rich is, but he still looks and moves pretty good. Most of his voices are right on while some are a little flaky. Like Danny Gans, he loses impersonation quality when he starts singing. His Elvis was horrible.
I thought it was a pretty good show, especially if you are an old Rich Little fan. I think he is running on a 6 month contract at the GN. My ticket was free, so I definitely got my moneys worth. I would probably go see him again for free. I don't think I would want to see him more than that. He plays with a 6 piece band and they don't really do a lot. I kinda feel sorry for Rich because at his age he should be enjoying retirement instead of being on stage and selling T-shirts and CDs after the show.
