The Las Vegas City Council agreed Wednesday to cooperate with the Regional Transportation Commission on a planned fixed guideway system connecting downtown with the strip.

The fixed guideway system is seen as an opportunity to advance downtown redevelopment.

The transportation commission is working to secure federal appropriations for the system, the cost of which has been estimated at $1.5 billion. The first phase would go from Cashman Field to the Stardust, with a station on Main Street near the Fremont Street Experience.
