Yup, 4.5 to 5 hours from LA to LAS.
No tolls along the way, unless you're talking about the Eastern Tollway in Orange County, which helps those of us in South Orange County avoid traffic congestion.
I'll bet the AMTRAK fare will be less than $100 for us seniors...Yea
Several years ago, when the Desert Wind AMTRAK train was running, I took that train to Las Vegas...the fare (RT) was $62.00, at the senior rate.

I decided to cehck out Amtraks website, which I found at the logical address. The only high speed train mentioned was for the northeast, and it had a downloadable wave file to hear a girl pronounce the 5 leeter word, Acela. Being thoroughly amused, I decided to check LV to LA schedule and fares.
First of all, it had the NERVE to argue with me about which Las Vegas I was talking about...i.e. Las Vegas New Mexico, Las Vegas International Airport, or Las Vegas Nevada station. Okay, I'm in the airline biz, sometimes you need details.
Then to my surprise, it didn't care about the Los Angeles name. It didn't seem to care that there are about a dozen commercial airports in the LA area, and a hundred smaller towns in the LA metro area. Just plain old Los Angeles was sufficient.
After narrowing down the Las Vegas choice, the only train service it listed was from Needles, CA. How dare it make me decide whether I am talking about service from New Mexico, Nevada airport, or Nevada town, and give me a listing from California.<g>
There is one AMTRAK direct trip from Vegas (as I know it) to somewhere in Los Angeles, via MOTORCOACH and the advance fare is $34. Expect to be able to bond with your buddies on the bus for a full 5 hours.
And for only $56, you can dwell in the bus for a full 10.5 hours with a change of MOTORCOACH in Bakersfield, and there is choice of 2 different trips on the schedule that stop in Bakersfield.
The Greyhound website was a little friendlier, the schedule was much bigger, and the driving times and fares were more consistant.
