   Car Rental Question
Has anyone opted lately for the car rental company to take care of filling the gas tank upon returning the car? I'm curious to know what the cost difference is in Las Vegas. I rented a car locally the past couple of days and was given the option of their gas--at $4.00 a gallon.

It seems to me that I've heard somewhere that the car rental companies quote a low per-gallon price, but then there are other add-ons, so in the end it really is quite expensive to buy their gas. Anyone know?

Hi Veronica,

A couple of weeks ago in Las Vegas Avis quoted $3.50 per gallon. Since that time the price has gone up at least $.30 per gallon so although $4.00 sounds high, it also sounds about right compared to other companies. Tom

V,
I think 2 things are getting confused. If you shoose to bring the car back full and it isn't, they cahrge a very high price to fill it. The other option is to buy teh full tank you leave with up front adn tehn you can bring it back empty. They price the full tank several cents cheaper than you can buy it anywhere else. The problem with this is, you've got to plan your gas purchases so that you bring the car back on fumes to make it pay. If you leave 5 gallons in the tank, you've already paid for it and there's no refund given. So, unless you KNOW you'll use the whole tank and you like the excitement of driving around on empty the last day, the pre-purchase is a bad option.

Thanks for all the info Tom and JM.

So are both options available from the car rental companies?

V,

All teh normal rental companies I've dealt with have both options. I say "normal" because when I've rented from Rent-A-Vette, they require you to retrun it full along with receipts to prove you put 92 octane in.

I was looking at the Rent-A-Vette web site, and one of those cute little Lamborghini Diablo's is a mere $6,250 a week, or $1,249 a day. At those prices, no one's going to worry about springing for 92 octane.

The Chevron station and the 7-Eleven Citgo station at Vegas Drive and Decatur Boulevard were both selling high-octane fuel for $2.019 on Friday. Regular unleaded was at $1.799 and mid-grade fuel was being sold for $1.919 a gallon at the two stations. The Chevron station said prices have increased 4 times in a week.

Are the high gas prices going to affect car rentals?

V, I heard that regular gas went to over $2 per gallon today. Guess I should have read your post here before posting the topic of $2 a gallon gas.
