   11 sickened on Vegas flight
A section of the Las Vegas airport was closed for several hours after a flight arrived from Denver with 11 sick people on board, officials said yesterday.
Passengers and crew members on United Airlines Flight 1491 were quarantined for several hours Saturday night at McCarran International Airport while the plane, passengers and luggage were checked by hazardous-materials experts, said Elaine Sanchez, a McCarran spokeswoman.
Four of the ill were flight attendants, she said.
Sanchez said the cause was being investigated. A passenger, Don Yarbrough, told KUSA-TV of Denver that investigators thought the ill had reacted to a cleaning fluid containing ammonia that had been used on the plane after it arrived in Denver from Cancun, Mexico.
There were 143 passengers and crew on the plane when it landed in Las Vegas.

I read recently that some airlines are going to sell ad space on their "barf bags."

Too bad they missed this opportunity.

But seriously, what a scary thing! And how frustrating to be in Las Vegas and either be sick as a puppy or be held in that isolation area waiting to see if you were going to become sick as a puppy.

Wonder if they where aloud to play the slot machines at the airport while they where waiting?

Hopefully it was nothing serious. But, at least they saved some money (HAHA).

It's amazing how many people you hear coughing and complaining about colds, etc. when they are leaving planes. I have started taking Airborn before I fly now.

Ed, do you feel taking Airborne helps?
I've seen it in the stores and wrote it off as snake oil.

Lee,
Airborne does work. I haven't used it for airplanes yet but I have taken it at the first sign of a sniffle and it has helped from keeping a full blown cold to hit.

I think it does a little.

I used to notice when I flew, that a lot of times I seemed to catch a slight cold.

Since I used airborne or the Walgreen version no problems.

What is the active ingrediant that wards off colds? I thought that was vitiman C.
I haven't seen people flying with any of those masks on, like they did a while back with the sars virus.
Is there anything in Airborne, that you couldn't take it every day of your life? I mean....when do you feel like getting sick????

There's a bunch of vitamin C, and then a bunch of herbs that they won't tell you about.

I always had a sneaky feeling that what really makes Airborne work is that it gets you to drink more water on a regular basis. You're supposed to take it fairly often, and you dissolve it in a good size glass of water.

Keeping hydrated (especially on a plane) can keep you from getting sick. Not to get too graphic, but nice moist nasal passages fight off germs better than dried out ones.

So I wonder if its just drinking expensive water.

However that didn't stop me from buying it for David's flights to Japan - and from using the leftovers this past winter! I think it tastes rather nasty, but we'll do anything to avoid a bad cold.

There is almost no humidity in an airplane either, which is another reason to stay hydrated.

I think these products have zinc oxide in them and that helps keep cold viruses away. I've never used Airborne but I use Cold Eze and swear by them.

But I'm no expert. I think Pharmacist Daisy would know more about this stuff.

Daisy recommends zinc lozenges since it's been PROVEN that zinc will keep the virused from adhering to mucous membranes. smile Daisy hears from lots of folks that swear by Airborne but knows no logical reason for it to work better than any multi-vitamin. Daisy takes Vit C regularly, drinks like a fish, uses zinc lozenges and echinachea at the first sign of a cold even though the info keeps changing on echinachea, and it might be in the same category as Airborne<g>.
