The US Senate just apporved $45 million for a Las Vegas to Disneyland supertrain. This type of project has been "on again, off again" many times. The bill will go to the president for approval.

But don't get your hopes up just yet. There are still a few obstacles. The magnetic levitation train in question would cost about $15 billion dollars to build, so there is still more funding to be secured from other sources. The $45 mil in federal money just barely covers the environmental impact study.

Hopefully, it will be vetoed.

Neither the Europeans or the Japanese have been able to justify Mag-Lev even though their situations are much more train friendly than the US.

The French have trains doing near 300 mph using more traditional technology and this is with their much greater share of nuclear power.

One would guess as the Indian casinos grow in California, Las Vegas will become less LA-centric and work more for tourists from colder climes and foreigners attracted by the cheap dollar.
