   Oral Contracts Don
   Oral Contracts Don
Have you ever gambled with someone or several friends and have made statements such as, "We'll split anything we win!" The March issue of "Casino Player" warns against such an oral contract. It tells about two women vacationing in LV...one paid for the other's trip as she felt the other woman was lucky and could win for both of them. They had a big win, but the person pushing the button was the one legally entitled to the pot so she did not share. The friend sued, the suit was dismissed, and later reinstated. Eventually the loser did receive some money, but the article said the women no longer speak to each other.

The lesson is that you should play your own game unless you have a WRITTEN agreement or you're married to the individual. This section of the article was entitled "Friends Don't Let Friends Share Jackpots" unless you want to play with fire.

Giving someone money, such as even $10, to gamble for you does not entitle you to any of the money won absent a written contract. It ended by saying don't expect a judge to give you much sympathy.

I've been guilty of playing $10-20 for a family member or friend even with my husband advising against it. Stopped this practice years ago and don't plan to start again. How many of us have done this in the past?

Beth, I will play money for friends and I make sure they get the winnings. Since I have never hit a royal or a major jackpot I don't know why anyone would want to give me money to play for them<G>
And if they would win I would make sure they got the money and the W2G<G>

I really hate it when someone gives me money to gamble for them. Especially when they want me to play the megabucks for them. What a moral delima it would create IF I won sometihng major.

What if you played their money through and won nothing, then played your money and won a BMW. Do you think they'd believe you when you told them you had already played their money and lost?

Doug,

I agree with your thinking. Fortunately, when I played for others, I never had any tough decisions to make. It would be extremely hard for someone to believe that it was "my" money that won the BMW. Don't gamble for others anymore.

Consider this scenario. Your best friend gives you $10 to put in Megabucks. The first day you lose your friends $10 and some of your money playing Megabucks. On the last day of your trip you win the Megabucks. Do you think that this person would still be your best friend?

IMHO.....I would never play any money for anyone without them present. The few times I have split the pot with anyone is only when we are there together and agree on putting an equal amount in the pot and spliting the winnings, if there are any winnings. The other side of the coin ....I wouldn't send money with anyone else. Sure, I hope to win when I play, but it's also a form of entertainment for me, and I'm NOT entertained when someone else is playing my money.

Interesting subject, and I read the Casino Player artical too.
I hate when friends ask me to play money for them. I have no problems making a future sports bet however.

Now, my sister has a thing going with roulette. There is a group of us (10), we donate $5 a day. She bets 3 times 1:1 bets but lets the money ride. So hence, $50 becomes $100 on the first win, $100 becomes $200 on the second win, and $200 becomes $400 on the third and final win. She quits at that point and hands all of us $40 for a $5 investment. Last trip to LV everyone chipped in $30, $5 for each day we where in LV. Out of 6 times, she won all 3 bets once, turning a net profit of $10 for everyone who played. On my recent cruise, we lost 8 straight times, but on other trips we've won several times a trip. She keeps records for the fun of it, the last 2 years we have come out ahead. We are all just waiting for the law of averages to rear it's ugly head! <S>
