   Paralyzed Megabucks Winner
Cynthia Jay-Brennan who was paralyzed from an automobile accident after hitting the 35 mil
Megabucks JP in January 2000 is back home in Las Vegas. Evidently, she married just prior to hitting the large jackpot and her husband is presently taking care of her - she has just enough movement in her arms to guide her wheel chair. The individual who hit her and killed her sister has been convicted and is "sweating out" a long prison term. An article (with pictures), highlighting her ordeal is contained the the March 26 edition of People Magazine. Wendell

Lee - I totally agree with you. This is an unbelievable story. You just never know what each day is going to bring. I can't imagine winning $35 million and then becoming paralyzed. I think I'd want to give the money back in exchange for full use of my body.

That is exactly what she said on the Today show this morning. Of course if the accident would have happened anyway, it is easier to cope with the money then without. They've got to keep this guy off the roads no matter what it takes.

Blossom, If I remember correctly this guy stole his mother's car and has had numerous drunk driving convictions in the past. I know what I would do with him!

Does anyone know if they have a death penalty in Nevada? If so, what kind? Leathal injection, hanging, firing squad, electric chair?

No, D.A.G., they consider that cruel and unusual punishment. I don't know how they kill them here, however.

The sad thing is that this happens everywhere and the courts ae very reluctant to put these people away. Apparently they look at the numbers and realize they don't have enough jails to put all the drunk and wreakless drivers away.

We had a story here last year of a woman who killed someone while driving drunk. Nothing unusual here except if was her ninth DWI offense. Whats it take to get these people off the road.

I was watching the travel channel and the commentator said 'don't even think of drinking and driving' in europe. You go straight to jail for a long time. It's considered an extremely serious crime.

The way I see it, this probably isn't much different than a story that happens all the time in just about all 50 states. I think it is a crying shame that just because she has the Megabucks angle, she is getting attention, sympathy, etc. I think the system needs to be overhauled for everyone.

Of course you are right, JMT, but isn't it true in every instance? Michael J. Fox is a perfect example. Many are afflicted with Parkinson's but he is a celebrity so he is able to publicize the ailment and get funding to help fight the disease. Jay-Brennan and Fox are better off than most because they have the funds to support themselves. Imagine the plight of the millions who are trying to live on social security disability. I don't know what the answer is. There probably isn't one.

Blos and JMT - you make a good point, however, what is good about all this coverage is that it does bring this horrific problem into the limelight and could start some important heads thinking (like our elected officials).
It really is time that people who have multiple DUI's are kept off the roads.

I dunno how the system works in the US, but in the UK there is a points system for driving offences. What this means is that you have Twelve points in your bank, so to speak, and for each offence points are deducted until you reach zero, when this happens you are banned from driving for a year, and then you can apply to get your licence back.

Driving under the influence is a 1-3 point offence, depending on how far over the limit you are. Causing an accident is 3-6 points depending on the nature of the damage. Causing personal injury is a 9-12 pointer, with automatic fines and imprisonment, plus you lose your licence for anywhere from 3 years to well, forever, basically.

Actually what keeps accident rates down more than anything are the larcenous rates of motor insurance, where once you have been responsible for an accident, no matter how minor, you need a second job to pay the premiums.

DAG, I know what you mean. There are many, many people driving around in this country too who have been banned or have no licence/insurance etc. Problem is that until they have an accident, it's very unlikely that they will get 'done', as we say.
