Binion's "philosophy" was that high roller limits were established by their "First Bet".
SOmeone may recall the accurate facts here but one gambler walked into Binion's with a suitcase full of money and bet it all on his first Craps bet. It amounted to over a million dollars,
He LOST.
But a couple of months later he returned with another suitcase and WON.
I was actually present at one of Binion's old day blackjack tables when a player placed a briefcase on the table and told the dealer he wanted to bet it all.
The Pit Boss watched as the dealer counted the cash (Took a few minutes) and play resumed.
That player won over $300,000 and left the table without so much as a "Howdy-Doo!".
Later on that evening they were talking about the guy who won $300,000 that afternoon, placed it in the cage for safekeepng, and returned to the tables that evening to lose it all.
Just two months ago I watched a young blackjack played betting $10,000 to $30,000 a hand at Bellagio with Pit Boss approval. He was lucky and on a steady win and was tipping the dealer with major cash. One such tip was in the neighborhood of $10,000 which resulted in a lot of discussion within the pit because the bet plus the tip was over the pre-approved limits.
When he was preparing to leave the table with approximately $400,000, another pit boss from another area came up to acknowledge his win and offered his congratulations.
A few years back at Caesars I watched a party of 6 mid-easterners dressed in desert array playing roulette at a private table surrounded by about four bodyguards in fancy suits. They were stacking $100 chip as high as "Chip stack height" is possilble.
When those stacks got too darn high, they asked the bit boss to give them $1,000 chips so that they could "Stack them higher!" (As though that would make any difference!)
I was the only one in the vicinity of that table who got a laff out of that statement.
And to finish this off, I know a player who plays Craps with a typical buy in of $100,000 and never had a Player's Card or a desire to have one.
BTW, he's a very bad Craps player and usually loses. But he seems to have lots of fun - win or lose.
