Spread of slots restricted The Gaming Commission limits which businesses can have restricted licenses, the panel's first such rule ever. By Ed Vogel Donrey Capital Bureau
Ending two years of debate, the Nevada Gaming Commission voted 3-2 Thursday to restrict the types of noncasino businesses that may have slot machines. Under the new regulations, convenience stores, restaurants that serve liquor by the glass, drugstores, groceries, bars and taverns can qualify for restricted gaming, or slot machine licenses. Their owners still must be found acceptable by gaming regulators before the businesses are licensed. But the regulations -- effective Feb. 1-- prohibit slot machines in new liquor stores, gas stations, restaurants that do not serve liquor, coin-operated laundries, car dealerships, motels, car washes, fast-food restaurants and sandwich shops.
