The coast is clear for the Rio Suite Hotel & Casino to go ahead with plans to add a 53-story hotel. - August 3, 1999 - GamingToday
Clark County commissioners gave their nod of approval at a July meeting.
The new resort would be situated on 41.2 acres of land adjacent and north of the present Rio. Plans call for a 3,000-room hotel in a 483-foot tower that would reach to the stars. The new project would also allow a 258,000 square-foot casino and 18 villas.
The land to be used was formerly zoned for light manufacturing. The county has waived some conditions to allow another tower to be built.
The new expansion would join the existing 258,000 square foot hotel and convention center. The new casino would be twice as large as the existing one.

Mark, I thought the Rio had plans to build a hotel/casino back there that would be strictly high roller. This place sounds too big for that. I wonder if this is in place of or in addition to? I think the 258,000 figure in your last paragraph might be a typo?

The Rio must feel that they can expand there business enough to fill the new rooms. If they continue their unfavorable treatment of their customers, there will be a lot of empty rooms.
