Boy, those earthquakes are scary. This is the second one I've felt here. One was about '88-'89 in Las Vegas. And this one today was at 2:47 am in CA. The beds were rocking <g> and the plants were swaying. No injuries reported yet here in LV. Amtrak did derail in CA.

Yup, Gail, the shaking brought my wife and I right up out of bed at 2:46am this morning here in So. California. The quaking went on for about 40 seconds, with several aftershocks following. It caused a tsunami in our pool, sloshing water out of it and onto the surrounding deck. A real roller!

No damage where we live, and we're thankful the epicenter was in a remote part of the
California desert. Apparently only three people were slightly injured in the train derailment. The passengers were bused to their destinations.

Just another price we pay for living in Paradise!

Dick, These clocks are always wrong <bg>.

Glad you had no damage.

I saw a special TV program one time where they were doing a lot of experimenting in Lake Mead. "They" think when the "big one" hits, the break will not be the Nevada/California border but the Colorado River.

What do you think?

Gail, do you think they oughta build that high speed train to come to Vegas from Phoenix instead of SoCa?

Hi Gail,
I didn't get a chance to look at our pool but our vertical blinds were going wild.
It was only a matter of time until this happened and, fortunately, it didn't cause much damage. Hopefully it'll be a while before another hits. I was just surprised that LV & Phoenix felt it, too.

Gail, Dick and Gale, glad everyone is ok. I imagine the hotel guests on the 30th floor of the hotels were reconsidering asking for those higher up rooms with a view<G>
And Gail, rocking beds aren't all that bad<G>

Joe, I'm not a "fast" type of person anymore like the rest of you <bg>. I don't need a high speed train. I wish they would just concentrate on fixing up the old Amtrak. Never happen though.

The Southwest Chief is the train that went off the tracks during the quake. One of my favorite trains.

Gail F, Earthquakes are just something that I don't care for at all <g>. Being a control "freak" type of person and not being able to control the ground I'm standing on just doesn't settle well with me.

I'm really glad there wasn't too much damage. And with Amtrak following a freight train, they were only going 60 mph instead of their usual 80 mph. So this helped.

Yesterday, our local news was waiting to hear if their were any heart attack victims. These quakes usually cause a few.

How long have you lived in CA? How do you feel about the quakes? Do you think about it often?

I saw an interview with a woman who was a first-time Las Vegas visitor. She was feeding quarters into a slot machine at the Paris hotel when the quake hit. She said she stopped for a moment, then said to herself "it must be one of those Vegas attractions," and went back to her machine!

Mark,
That is so funny. LOL On our newscast they said that the casinos were more full after the quake than before. It seemed that people who had gone to bed decided that they felt safer downstairs than in their rooms. I guess as long as they were downstairs they gambled. Hmmm, come to think of it maybe it was one of those Vegas attractions. <vbg>

Lee,
If there is a city where they could figure out how to do that, you know it's Las Vegas. LOL

I'll bet some of those visiting Las Vegas who hadn't experienced an earthquake before gave some fast consideration to changing their homeward bound reservations. That's what happened a number of years ago in Pasadena. A group of ladies attending a church conference were descending in an elevator at their hotel when a quake shook them up. One of the women disappeared shortly after breakfast. When her companions went looking for her later in the day, she was nowhere to be found. One of them decided to call her home in Iowa to see
if her husband knew where she was...guess who answered the phone? She had left everything in her room and gone straight to the airport!

Hi Gail,
Uh-oh....another Gail who's a control freak like me!
Well, I've lived in SoCal all my life and won't let myself worry about earthquakes. We have plenty of water, propane, soups and stuff like that in case our power is off for any extended length of time. We are also using this stuff in case the Y2K fiasco takes place which I really doubt will but that's a whole other story (VBG).
One good thing (if there can be one during an earthquake) is that the last few have been in the early morning hours when all three of us have been together. I could get very stressed worrying about Steve at work in the San Fernando Valley and Jordan at school...see, it's the control thing with me!
