LV Metro Police gave out over 450 citations to walkers and drivers during the week of Oct. 5, trying to reduce the number of pedestrians being hit by cars. In total, the police handed out 393 jaywalking citations, and 83 citations to drivers who failed to yield at crosswalks. The average fine involving for both the jaywalkers and drivers is $95.

The police have investigated 82 fatal accidents this year, with 27 of them involving the death of a pedestrian. Out of those 27 deaths, 24 were caused by jaywalking.

V,
450? My eyes perk-up when ever I see numbers like that in a short period of time. My next question is.....where did all that fine money go?
$42,750.00 is a lot of cash! I'm sure they just had the health and welfare of the visitors to Las vegas in mind at all times. I'd also like to see how many of those poor people where Vegas residents too. My guess is a large majority lives in LV. Any data on that?

Veronica,

I am glad they are giving out tickets to jaywalkers. I hate when people walk on a red light to find out that the TURN lane cars are coming at them. DUH!

We do not rent a car while in LV so we do a lot of walking. Everytime we go I am amazed at how many people follow the person in front of them rather then watch the light themselves. Sometimes we are the only ones left standing on the curb at the red light. The "cows" are dodging cars and running.

Jan

Lee: I have the same questions you do. I hesitated posting this one because there was no data I could find on where the majority of the tickets were given (the Strip?) and whether the majority went to tourists or to residents or how it all came down. I sure wish I had that info.

Jan: In NYC it's the same story with so many people walking around....I'm usually left at the curb too watching the lemmings dodge the cabs.

We should just be careful everywhere we go!

See, that's the difference between NYC and LAs Vegas. In Las Vegas a pedestrian can jump into the street, dodge a bunch of cars, dart in and out of traffic, practically get themselves killed and finally make it to the other side in one piece. For that the police will give you a jaywalking ticket.

In NYC, the police congratulate you!<g>

On tonight's news, they said the count of pedestrian deaths is now at 36. All 36 were pedestrian error. Only 2 were tourists.

I know jaywalking is a pain in the *** to all of us but.......after seeing the crime across from the HRH in September I'd rather some action be taken there as well.

Any Gail who feels like answering <g>:

Today's USA Today reports that 2 more pedestrian fatalities occurred Sunday and Monday, and they report this raises the total to 26 so far this year.

I'm not sure why there are discrepancies in the number of deaths reported from the various media sources.

VEronica, I don't know why the discrepancy but you can add one more to the list. Another pedestrian has died after being hit by a car on Eastern near Charleston on Monday night.

And I am also very sad to report that an 11 year old boy has died from being hit by a vehicle. The boy darted out into the street while trying to get away from a dog.

Everyone!,
Please be VERY VERY careful while walking on the strip... There are many drunk drivers as well as Road Rage on the strip. It doesn't matter what day or time, the LV strip is a very dangerous place to be crossing the street, even when you use the cross walks. There have been too many deaths/accidents so far. If everyone tries to be careful and courteous, then, maybe the cars/pedestrians can share our streets.

A Las Vegas man was killed Wednesday night when he walked into the path of a car on Paradise Road. The victim was attempting to cross Paradise at Sierra Vista Drive when he stepped in front of a car.

This death is the 99th traffic fatality of the year in Las Vegas police jurisdiction, according to the LVRJ article. Can that be right? 99?
