A Las Vegas man accused of chasing his girlfriend into busy Las Vegas Boulevard on Thanksgiving where she was hit and killed by a vehicle was held yesterday without bond in the Clark County Detention Center. The man was charged with murder and is on a suicide watch in the detention center.

Metro Police say the man and his girlfriend had been drinking Thursday and later were arguing in the 3900 block of Las Vegas Boulevard South near the Luxor. The woman was hit about 9:20 p.m. Thursday by a sport utility vehicle, police said.

The woman, a Las Vegas resident, and the suspect had been living at a Las Vegas Boulevard motel for the past two weeks, police said.

This is a rather unusual tragedy, but not one that surprises me. Based upon the numbers of cars I saw streaming into Las Vegas on Thanksgiving, it would have been hard to miss getting hit by one.

Even with the overhead bridges at the corners of Tropicana and Flamingo & Las Vegas Blvd., It was amazing to see how many people ignored them, choosing instead to tie up traffic by walking across the street. Many of them also chose not to wait for the 'walk' signal, and dashed across even though the signal was against them. In spite of the so-called crackdown on jaywalking, you still see a lot of it going on along the Strip.

Judging by the traffic I saw on Thanksgiving day on the strip, they only way to get killed by a car would be to stick your head in front of a tire and wait 20 minutes for traffic to allow the car to pull forward a few inches.

Of course there is that unwritten law that if you have a SUV, it's perfectly acceptable to drive on sidewalks, ditches, and curbs without speed restrictions.
