Comedian Carole Montgomery not smiling about the Jerry Lewis incident.
Carole Montgomery of "Crazy Girls" isn't smiling about Jerry Lewis comments on female comediennes.
She said. "I recently went to see him perform a couple of weeks ago. He has disapointed me. I always respected him as a comic because he's one of the greats. He's one of the classics. Had he made the comment before my husband & I went to see him, we wouldn't have gone. You just don't say something like that. There were too many great female comics even around during his time. He has a little girl, so by saying that women are only baby making machines, is that what he wants for his daughter, too? I don't know what he could have been thinking. Regaurdless that I'm a comedian, but as a parent what a horrible thing to say. I'm glad I didn't see him backstage, because had he been rude to me, it wouldn't have been good. I like to go and see all of the greats in comedy. This is the first time he had been back in Las vegas in 14 years so I think he was a little nervous, but he put on a good show. He didn't do anything bizarre, he was sweet. In his defence he may have been trying to be flippant and it backfired on him. He gets a bad rap because a lot of people don't think his stuff is funny. He's not my idol, but I'm a fan."
Carole continued, "My idols are more like the Max Brothers, Jack Benny, Richard Pryor, and George Carlin. I worked with Don Rickles and saw George Burns many years ago. I pay my respects to all of the greats in comedy. It was a stupid thing to say. He did try to apologize for the comment saying,'I see women as incredibly strong people who deserve our undying respect' and 'there are times when half statements get misinterpreted' and'My kids are innocent and they deserve your care and good will. Please except my humble apology, and lets get back to where we were.'" Jerry said his favorite comedians are Whoopi Goldberg, Elayne boosler, Diane Ford, Phillis Diller, Beatrice Lillie, Martha Ray and Carol Burnett. Lewis, 73, was at a Q & A session on Feb. 12 at the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen CO, when he made the anti-female comedian remarks that erupted in a controversy heard around the world.
