Read an article that it was confirmed three Las Vegas locals contracted a rare tick-borne disease possibly while in the Mt. Charleston area. All three were hospitalized initially and now are recovering at home.
It is highly recommended that anyone hiking or walking in the area take all necessary precautions. That is, wear long sleeves, use an insect repellent and check oneself for ticks frequently.
Just this past summer I happened to discover a deer tick that causes Lyme disease on me and it gave me a darn good scare. Since then, I've been slappping a flea, insect and tick repellent put out by Avon all over myself when I'm working in the yard or hiking. This is something that cannot be avoided, but please, please take all precautions. Never imagined I could possibly pick up a "deer" tick in my own yard.
