Ah, Lee, you are hard on such a venerable institution! The Golden Gate has some wonderful old pictures on the walls....historical views of the city, way before it was a city. The Golden Gate was the Sal Sagev, until a man from San Francisco bought the hotel and casino. His family still owns it, and does their very best to keep the rooms updated. The diner there has good food, and is quite friendly, as we have had many interesting conversations with fellow diners. I cannot comment on the sea mon...er....shrimp cocktail, as I am allergic, and do not partake, but there are a lot of folks eating them in there..... By the way, I have never won more than a dime in there, but I still like it as a nice feel of the REAL old Las Vegas. It's probably one of the most historical buildings left in town! I believe it was the first permanent hotel in Las Vegas. L.

I am curious about the part where say the family does their best to keep the rooms updated. I stayed in a room there in about 1990. Everything was painted in a hospital green color. Walls, floors, doors, window sills, door handles, radiators, etc. Everything was basically clean, with no dust, dirt, rats, trash, or anything else you see downstairs. The fixutres, furniture, accessories, etc. were all far from updated. I suspect much of the room such as doors, bed structure, heaters, and things like that were around in the Sal Saveg days...just my opinion.
My stay there was not bad. I have no real complaints. Personally, I did not feel completely comfortable there because of flimsy walls and doors, very quiet and empty hallways, and the quality of people that loitered in that area in the pre-FSE late nights.
You are correct, the place is a valuable piece of history.
