My friend who moved to Vegas a few weeks ago just sent an e-mail. Said winds were so strong today they blew his dog over! Also closed McCarren for a bit.

Winds clocked at 90+ mph on Monday, at Wheelers, S. of Strip......trees, powerlines down.......roofs off in Pahrump, and many more trees down, and today, we have MORE winds........supposed to be sustained at 35-45, with gusts to 60........temp dropped 20 degrees in an hour on Monday.........went from 90s to low 70s yesterday...... Not a good day for RVs......or boats!
I stopped by the marina (Las Vegas Bay) on Monday to check on my boats and they are fine. A few others I can't say the same, there are going to be a few surprised boat owners next time they see their boats. Bimini tops got ripped off, covers not secured for high winds blown off and some boats with inadequate dock lines getting slammed around in their slips.
We were out at the lake this weekend and the winds started up Sunday afternoon. My two little Cajun offsprings got a good lesson in fuel management. They ran out of gas about 300 yards from the slip and had to row the dinghy back in, into the wind. Their little butts were worn out after that. :p

Glad your boats were okay, Ralph, I was thinking of you and your water toys when the winds were so high. One thing, being a total non-boater, what is a Bimini top for a boat? Is that like a Bikini top for a person? Perhaps a Bimini top would be better for my figure (?) type!!!!
Bimini tops cover the boat over the passanger areas, aka the cockpit & helm, of the boat to provide shade. They are held in place with poles that stretch the cover out and they are attached to the gunwale of the boat. They do fold up for storage but a lot of people just leave them extended instead of going through the trouble of folding and unfolding them each time they use their boat. After the winds we had this week, I bet a lot more boat owners will be folding up their bimini tops from now on. :p

Thanks for the explanation, Cajun. Now, I know some "boat language"! You had one heck of a trip, D.A.G.! Did you win your 50 bucks at Megabucks at the Hacienda? By the way, my 21 dollar Megabuck record is about 17 seconds!
I was there that day. When I knew it was going to be windy I knew i had to visit the CUTOUT. I spent a couple hours on Sunset at cutout where about 50 cars can park and watch the landings. You can even tune your FM to 88.5 and listen to the pilots and the tower. There were several planes that tried to land and couldn't get it down and aborted landing and i guess went to LA. I'm a former military pilot so still love to see them land. McCarran is one of the few airports in the country that you can get that close to the runways.
