Las Vegas Bay Marina On The Move
Las Vegas Bay Marina On The Move
Las Vegas Bay Marina is in the process of being located to Horsepower Cove 10 miles across the lake.

This move has been quite a sight to see. They are using just a couple of the owners yachts to move an entire section of the marina. To give you an idea of how massive this move is, this marina is a 650 slip marina and they are moving all the slips and boats in four moves, that's a lot of boats and slips to tow across the lake at one time.

They have one more section to move, and that is the section I have my boat in. They plan on moving it on Monday 10/14. I got the day off (Columbus Day), looks like I'll go down and watch my boat get moved with about 150 others, all at once.

For pictures and info of the move, the owners of the marina have a website.

You could put Las Vegas Bay Marina in a search engine and it would show up. :p

Or I could come close to bending the rules and tell you that it's boatinglakemead dot com. wink

Hi Cajun,
I was fascinated by the picture in the LVRJ this week. I wondered if your boat was among those being moved. I saw the pictures, but I still don't understand how they can DO that......don't the boats bump up against "stuff"? It's amazing........... Good luck with your move.......it would be really interesting to see in person, you'll have to post a little Trip Report! smile

Ralph,
This is amazing! How can they do this without any damage to the boats and dock! This is a very large scale move!
How much closer or futher must you drive to reach the new site?
Thanks for the site.

If anyone gets their boat damaged it's their own fault. We were given plenty of notice of the move and the notice said to have adequate dock lines (6 point tie minimum, I put 8 on mine) and that the dock lines are in good condition. They suggested that if you have old dock lines to replace them with new ones before they start moving the marina. They are towing the marina at such a slow speed, around 1 mph, that bumping around should be minimal. They are also watching the winds and if they don't have glass like conditions on the lake the day of a move, they hold off for the next day.

The drive to the new location is 4 minutes longer from my house than where we have been. Used to take 26 minutes now it will take 30 minutes. We will take Lake Mead drive to the I-515 and go South on it through Boulder City and enter the lake by the visitors center.

There are a lot of advantages to moving the marina to the new location. If you would see the difference in the view we have of the lake at the new location it is FAR better than the view at the old location. We are in the very last row of slips, so the view from the back of our boat is the entire lake and not the back row of boats in other slips. Water is much clearer due to the fact that we are no longer in the wash that comes into the lake from the city and it's three sewage treatment plants that dump into that wash. Even though it's a few minutes longer drive, it's mostly freeway driving now, much less stop and go traffic and stop lights. Cruising over to the dam is one of our favorite places to cruise to and hang out, from the old location it was 12 miles one way, now that we are 10 miles closer, it's only a couple of miles, cuts down on the use of that $2.13 a gallon marine fuel.

If the winds are calm tomorrow they will move the last section and that's the one that my boat is in. I've got the day off so I'll be at the lake watching my boat and slip make the move.

That picture of the move in the Thursday LVRJ was from the thrid section that they moved on Wednesday. It is quite an impressive sight to see. I went down there on Monday when they moved the second section, that section not only had boats and slips it had the marina store, resturant & lounge with it. I stopped at one of the scenic overviews of the lake and watched it go by. It was unbelievable that just a couple of boats tied to the side of that huge mass of boats and slips could move it.

Was this one of those marinas where you could feed popcorn to the carp?

Feeding carp popcorn is a favorite hobby at this marina. We joked that when the marina moves that someone should be detailed to drop popcorn off the marina while under tow and bring the carp with us to the new location.

I bet the carp will find their way to the new location with no problem, they know where the food supply is located.

I went out there today and moved my boat out of my slip that is scheduled to be moved tomorrow. I took it over to the new location and talked to the owners and they let me put it in a temporary slip until my slip gets moved and secured in its new home. So my boat will not be making the move by being towed in its slip, at least not the 27 footer, I left the dinghy in the slip to be towed over.

Another plus for the new location, the Hacienda Casino is just a few minutes away from the marina. If you go to the Hacienda website, that's haciendaonline dot com for you Lee :p there is a picture of the casino with Lake Mead in the background, the shoreline right behind the casino is the new location of the marina.

Ralph,
I liked the Hacienda Casino, it was clean and everyone treated us nice there. Can't remember if they had any full pay VP machines though???

So....how did the move go today????

The move is going well and slow as expected. as I post this the last of the marina is enroute to its new location. They pulled out of Las Vegas Bay around 9:00am this morning and they expect it to arrive between 8:00-9:00pm tonight. After it arrives they will have to spend most of the night securing it with cables and anchors. I had to leave my boat in the temporary slip again tonight, have to work tomorrow and there was no way I could stay all night until they finished.

I did get a chance to see this section moved from lake level from my boat. I cruised by it three times today to see how it's going. Talk about an awesome sight to see. Unbelievable that three boats can push a marina full of about 150 boats, sideways across the lake.

I went into the Hacienda today for my first time since it opened. I was quite impressed with how clean and nice the place looked too. I had breakfast at the snack bar, not bad for a $4.29 breakfast.

Once the marina is fully operational again, power hooked up and resturant open, they are going to have a hard time competing with the Hacienda. At their other location there was not any other place close by to eat so you were stuck with their menu and prices unless you wanted to drive 20 minutes back to town or cook on your boat. Now we can just drive five minutes up the hill and have a much better selection at much better prices. And when we are in our slips we do gather at the marina bar to socialize to the tune of $2.75 a can for domestic beer, I see future trips being made up to the Hacienda for beer call.

And the Hacienda has 10x's odds on craps with $2 minimum, guess where I'll be. Hey wait a minute, we go to the lake to get away from it all and now we have a casino with resturants five minutes from our slip, what's wrong with this picture? confused <LOL>

The last of the slips arrived at 9:30pm last night. I went back out there today to move my boat back in it's slip. They were still pulling cables to secure the marina this afternoon, but everything is in place where it's going to be for awhile. Right now we don't have any breakwater behind our slips, and I'm in the last row, the first one to get hit with incoming waves. I hope they get the breakwater put in place real soon before the winter North winds start to pound us.

If you go back and look at the website I mentioned earlier, they have updated pics that show the slips that got moved yesterday.

I also did an updated calculation of the number of boats in this last move. There are about 40 boats in each section and they moved eight sections yesterday. That's about 300 boats that got moved at once all powered by three yachts in the 35-40 foot range, AMAZING!!!!!
