There has been a lot construction in town lately. Much of it is new construction, but a lot seems to stem from an identity crisis. There have been many implosions. The Aladdin tops it all, being imploded and rebuilt as the Aladdin and remodeled into Planet Hollywood before the paint dried.
The two biggest projects seem to have no theme. City Center and Eschelon are just billon dollar buildings.
I heard a dollar number on what MGM is spending to de-Egypt Luxor and make it a non-theme resort.
Moving downtown, there is new construction and there is renovation to extend the safe part of Fremont St. Many people have a vision, and I see where it's coming from. I just don't see the timeline.
Remember back when they closed the Lady Luck to remodel it? When is the last time you heard a completion date?
Binions has been sold so many times, it's making my head spin.
The kicker is a developer who bough the Gold Spike. Yes the Gold Spike, somewhere downtown around 5th and Ogden. It was never much of a place, somewhat tolerable under Jackie Gaughn, and now with all the table games gone, it's just a 100 rooms and a slot joint. It's a good place to go to get mugged or breathe some second hand smoke that is strong enough for first hand.
So anyway, this guy buys the Gold Spike, pays over 15 million for it, and wants to turn it into a fancy botique hotel. The $25 rooms will soon go for $125. My favorite part of this story is a line by the new owner and I'm gonna have to cut and paste it from the RJ so I get it right.....
"Our specialty is taking crack houses and turning them into four-star boutique hotels," Covin said. "I think the Gold Spike is perfect for that."
Not bad for a guy that hasn't even seen the property he bought.
