The Garden Of Love wedding chapel was closed down, or at least it was supposed to. The city council voted unanimously to shut the place down due to a laundry list of poor business practices including a public nuisance. The two day hearing at city hall was a public circus. The clown that runs the chapel was very loud, obnoxious, and claimed complete innocence. News reporters showed wedding were still going on.
The allegations have been brewing for years and started with advertisements handed out on the streets. Being a competitive business in Las Vegas, the competition got physical. Allegations include fights between the people handing out the handbills, and go as far as the Garden Of Love hiring homeless people to attack the competition on the streets. They also fight in court. Then there's the allegation of a competing chapel giving a hotel room, money, and cocaine to the uncle of the owner of the Garden Of Love in exchange for restraining order against her.
But there is much more than a little friendly competition. The consumer is also taking a hit. The biggest story there happened on 7-7-07, which was supposed to be a lucky day. People paid big money to get wed that day on some big wedding packages. It seems the Garden Of Love dropped the ball on that one too. One couple claims the chapel was dirty and stunk, the time was pushed back 3 hours, the limo was 2 hours late, the minister was not prepaid and the groom would have had to pay him $400 to wed them, except his pants never showed up. He had to borrow pants from the best man. The limo driver had no idea where the reception was, but he did have strict orders not to go back to the chapel because there was a mini riot in progress. In a minor clerical error, the couple continued to get billed regularly by the chapel, $1000 at a time.
Some day this couple will look back at this day and laugh. Last I heard, the chapel was still doing weddings, even though their license is expired.
