Time spent with friends make the trip; it would be a much shorter drive to Reno/Tahoe just to gamble.
Regardless of traffic and construction, the trip somehow always seems to come out to 8 hours, plus or minus 10 minutes. No traffic convoys on the way down meant I stuck close to the speed limits - lots of traffic on the way home meant I flowed with it about 10 miles over the speed limits, which made up for the construction zones.
IdahoFingerSteaks had been on my radar screen for 6-9 months; I wish I had made it a higher priority - or that they're just moving locations. The website is still up, but it still lists the closed address.
LOL, I will be arriving in Terminal D in the early afternoon on the 18th - do ya know any place at the airport that serves Macallan?
Daisy, great trip report, sorry to hear it wasn't a winning one. Glad you found time for us, and we did make the Cannery and got our free shirts. I hate feeling ill in Vegas, but good to hear your better now. There is always November! I'm ready to go back already...are you?

Daisy - Thanks for the FIX! Sorry about all those 4-to-the-Royals - I know how frustrating that can be! And sorry about the sleeping troubles - I though I was the only one who suffered from that in Vegas!
Jeff, I think we might be able to work out a mini-meet ... I'll e-mail ya.
Lee, I'm sorry I didn't feel like driving out to the Cannery but happy we got to chat at the StageCoach. LOL, I'm sure we'll get together in November - getting together with friends is the highlight of my trips! I'm definitely ready to go back to Nevada - I leave Thursday for a VP tournament in Reno.
Mike, there was one day in the middle of the trip when I stopped hitting those 4s, and I missed them<g>. They are exciting, if not profitable, although the fifth card was sometimes a deuce. The sleep problems were temporary, but I do wish I had torn the covers off that mattress out at Sam's Town - that was the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in, and I will find out the brand on that mattress on my next visit to Sam's.
Daisy it was great to see you again as well as everyone else also. Sure was nice to have a couple of hours with some good old friends again.
And yes, the snake kept Poppa & Momma Cajun away from our house. Not only did they spend a week in hotels while they were in town, they wouldn't even come near the house. They wouldn't even come in our neighborhood. Mrs. Cajun had to go pick up the lil' Cajun from the house and meet us at Lucille's for dinner, while I drove Poppa & Momma Cajun over to Lucille's from GVR.
Like I said, MamaCajun & I have a lot in common, including an acute dislike for snakes! I wish I had spent more time down at her end of the table - we could have swapped snake stories<vbg>.
It was fun seeing you, sorry Chris couldn't make it, and I hope Poppa & Mama are in town in November.
daisy-the four to the royals will come due in nov and fill the screen with many royals for you.good luck in reno, cash some of those fourto's!!c u in nov.
Dave, after a while, I was just laughing when I held three-to-the-Royal ... the fourth card would fill in and get my hopes up, and the fifth card would royally flush those hopes<g>.
I was really debating whether to fly or drive this trip, and I obviously drove, but I did find a hot November airfare during the debate, so I will be there to witness your return to the Thanksgiving meets.
LOL, are you trying to rub in the idea that you get into town a few days ahead of me? OK, I'm a little jealous because you'll still be there a few days after I leave too.
HOWEVER, I do have a little side trip up to the foothills in 9 days, with a traditional buckwheat pancake breakfast at the local tribal casino ... and Mama Deuces & I will also be seeing both Forever Plaid and White Christmas.

I'm paying attention Lee - but for me its 20 days and counting!
Daisy - I'd say I'm rubbing it in, but y'all y'all (that's plural for you all - since it means many of you on the board) have been to Las Vegas much more recently than I have.
Put it another way, it's been 11 months and 2 days since I left McCarran.
Good point, Kes ... my withdrawl pains really aren't that bad ...let's not forget Harrah's Reno keeps sweetening the pot with trips I can take now that I'm retired and no longer forced with an either/or choice between time off for Reno or Las Vegas.
Senator, I don't know if they use the sour starter, but those pancakes are awesome. We lucked into them as part of a "2 Deuces" breakfast, with 2 pancakes, 2 eggs, 2 bacon or sausage. Now we just order the pancakes with a side of bacon, which is apple-cured and also excellent. LOL, I don't think I'd had buckwheat pancakes for 40-45 years, and I had totally forgotten just how good they can be.

Most places serve buckwheat pancakes that have the same texture of regular pancakes, they just use buckwheat flower.
REAL buckwheat cakes are made with a sour starter. They're typically much thinner than regular pancakes and like sourdough bread, you can really taste the 'sour'. My grandmother used to make them at family, holiday gatherings.
