Anyone remember this Casino?

It's one of the few casino's we skipped on, those first couple of trips, then it was gone!
Was it where the Mirage now stands? My memory is a little cloudy.

Lee, I remember it as being very easy to forget.<g>

I think that it was located across from the DI, and when Howard Huges lived in the DI, the sign on the SS bothered him, so he bought (or tried to buy) the Silver Slipper so that he could turn the sign off.

I think I'm just about 90% right here, but sometimes I only use 10% of my brain according to the smart guys, so you figure it out!

The Silver Slipper was located on the west side of the Strip and one block south of the Star Dust on the cornor.

It announced its presence with a huge silver slipper covered with blinking silver lights. Today, "The Smelly Sneakers" would be a more appropriate name.

It was a little casino with maybe 50 stalls for parking in the front.

It catered to the ladies offering lots of slots and an all-male review called something like "Thunder From Down Under".

Must have been a heck of a show because it closed shortly after the Thunder struck!.

There is no vacant lot there anymore. I think it is now a vacant small cornor of a large green grassed parcel owned by Steve Wynn.

But I may be wrong!

I'd like to mention this in passing. We spent the majority of the first ten days in LV on the southern end of the Strip between Tresure Island and Mandalay Bay.

One early evening we took a ride along the other end of the Strip and the dissimilarity was striking. It appeared bleak and gray and almost abandoned from the Desert Inn and all the way down to the Strat.

We entered the Desert Inn and the beautiful casino was just about empty. I understand that the new owners are going to make changes to bring back the crowds. I hope it happens soon. It's a beautiful hotel with two major award winning restaurants and a very nice casino. Appears to offer a lot of class.

Then over to Circus Circus. It's a great place for families who want to bring kids to Las Vegas so it was full of families and kids but I would hate to stay there. But - the Circus Circus Steakhouse is supposed to be the finest steak place in Las Vegas and has been for a number of years.

Then to the Sahara. Great looking place from the outside. Not classy inside but full of gamblers playing $1.00 blackjack. This is how they plan to stay on their feet on that end of the Strip. I think they are making the right decision. We stayed for a few hours and had a great time. The place was really rocking. Good people = good times!

No one seems to know what they are going to do with the big boarded up place whose former name I presently forget. It was going to be a Country Western place and then Jethro was going to move in with the Beverly Hillbillies.

Developers are moving a little slow because of its location on that end of the Strip I guess.

Someone like Steve Wynn is needed to develop something that everyone wants to see to get that north end moving again.

Can the WWF make it happen?

Silver Slipper also had Boylesque as a house show.

I think Jethro settled on Reno for his casino.

I hope Stevie doesn't start taking over the north end, but I hope even more so that WWF does not try to make any major developments in Vegas.

Thanks for the replys everyone.
I remember the silver slipper sign and all those white lights. I just never went inside and was wondering what kind of place it was.

From what I've read so far, I didn't miss much and I did good on walking past it.

My feeling is Steve Wynn wouldn't want anything to be built down that far and least take away something from his end of the strip. M2C

Will: The distinction of Circus Circus Steakhouse being the best steakhouse in LV has been a bit shaky for awhile although it does rank up there on the list. Looks like Outback is the favorite steakhouse, according to the LVRJ Best of Poll for '99. The LVRJ selected Hungry Hunter as their choice. Anyone ever been there? It's on Rainbow.

V,
The Outback is a nice place, serves a decent meal, but it's not going to be the best in LV. or even second place.

Lee: It's suprising how Outback made No. 1, isn't it? But then that's mostly a LVRJ locals poll; but even so, it's Las Vegas, there's a boatload of restaurants, and a chain is No. 1! Go figure.

Our first trip to Vegas we stayed at the Frontier and I am almost positive the Silver Slipper was right next door to the north of the Frontier.

And I think it is/was an empty lot or extra parking for The New Frontier.

JMT, If the story about Howard Hughes is true and if my thinking is correct that the Silver Slipper location is right next door to the Frontier, it does seem to make sense.

Howard Hughes did own the Frontier and the DI is almost directly across the street from the Frontier and SS location.

I wonder what year the SS went down and if HH still owned the Frontier at that time. I'm going to do some research.

It was around 1970 when Howard Hughes bought the Silver Slipper. He was living at the DI and the sign did bother him. I believe that it was purchased later by the Stardust.

Karla,
I'm sorry, my mind is not what it used to be. Not that it was ever really sharp or anything. <S>
Glad you stoped in to check out the new place! Make yourself comfy and stay awhile!

According to the May 1994 issue of Las Vegas Style, Howard Hughes bought the following from 1967-1969.

13m for Desert Inn where he lived.
14m for the Sands where Venetion is now.
03m for the Castaways where the Mirage is now.
14m for the Frontier where picketers lived for a while.
05m for the Silver Slipper (where was that?).
17m for the Landmark which he opened as a new hotel. The convention center uses that land now.

Prior to 1969 only individuals (not corporations) could hold a gaming license.

He was frustrated that airlines did not make it easy to get to Las Vegas so he bought one and called it Hughes Air West. They had yellow planes with blue letters. In the mid 70s I flew from Ontario CA to Spokane WA on Hughes Air West. The connection was made in Las Vegas, but I was not yet old enough to gamble. Recently Harrah's and some others started (or restarted) National Airlines to have more non stop flights to LV. History repeats itself again.

Brad, Thanks for the very interesting info re: Howard Hughes' purchases and airline.

I have a little extra time today so I am going to try to find out just where the Silver Slipper was.

My first trip here to LV, I know we walked in and out of the SS but can't remember exactly where it was. I "thought" it was right next door to the north of the Frontier but now I'm thinking it may have been closer to the Stardust than I initially thought.
