One of the pieces of Las Vegas history has disappeared from downtown Las Vegas. Binion's has sold the $1,000,000 that was displayed in the horseshoe at the casino. I'm glad Michael's mom got to see the display again in November. It was one thing that she remembered from her trips many years ago and she wanted to see it again.

LeeAnn,
Any more details? Did they sell it as in, someone else now owns the entire display and might display it somewhere else? Or was it more like, they took the money and deposited in in the bank?

Jeff, Becky Binion said she sold the $10,000 notes because she got a good price for them. I kind of got the impression that they went to a collector. From what I understand the horseshoe itself is still there, but now minus the 100 bills.

According to the LV Sun, the display at Binion's was quietly sold in December. Becky Behnen wouldn't identify the private collector who bought the collection of 100 $10,000 gold certificates, or how much was paid, other than to say the price tag was "substantial." The sale was completed after the collector approached Behnen through a third-party broker. Today, the Treasury Department says only 340 $10,000 bills remain in circulation, meaning the Binion's display accounted for a full 30 percent of the bills in circulation. That made the bills far more valuable than their face value.
A little bit of trivia: Charles Manson and his followers once mugged for the camera in front of the display. Another man stripped naked and waited for the word "cheese."!!!

According to today's LVRJ, 53 year old Jay Parrino, a coin dealer, is the new owner of the 100 $10,000 bills that were once displayed at Binion's Horseshoe. According to Parrino, the bills are still in mint condition. The bills will be displayed February 10-13 at the Long Beach Coin and Collectibles Expo. Parrino won't reveal what he paid for the bills, but reportedly he spent under $10,000,000 for them. Parrino has said that he knows a dozen people who will pay "six figures" for one of the bills.
