   Down Memory Lane
   Down Memory Lane
I'm just sitting here thinking of past LV trips and I got out the old picture album.

(we used to take pictures, lots of them on our vacations and actully keep them in book form as apposed to now when I may get pictures developed and find out Picture #1 is from 3 years ago and then just throw them in a drawer somewhere)

Anyway, I was paging through an old album today with fond memories of past LV trips and I also came across some old items that I had long since forgotten about.
You see, on our first trip to LV, I was ammazed by a great many things. 1. friendliness of the employee's, 2. Free drinks, 3. the lights & sounds of the place, 4. free drinks, 5. Just how big everything was, 6. free drinks!
Drink chips & coupons. I'm not talking about the buy one get one free type, or the free drink with a dinner purchace type. Nope these where handed out while you where playing at the bar. A casino employee every 1/2 hr or so would walk by and hand out these tickets or tokens. Well, back in my youth, I wasn't able to keep up with the steady pace of coupons at some casino's. So I drought a few back home with me as souviners.
I don't recall, but I'm guessing this is when the bartenders couldn't just go and offer drinks to a player at the bar? I have ones from the Frontier & Holiday Casiono's. Not the fanciest of places, but the drinks where cold.

So anyone else got any old time stories?
Lets hear them!

Will make a long story short. In 1950 I was on a troop train headed to calif. to go to Korea. (boy am i old) we were side tracked in sparks NV. I got off the train against orders and went to a liqure store and bought 6 fifths. Put 2 dollars in a slot machine, first time I ever played one and won 100 dollars. I still have one of those real silver dollars. I spent the rest but mailed the last one to my mom to keep for me. Good thing I ended up in a pow camp for 17 months. That dollar means a lot to me I would not take a million for it. (I think) hope no one ever offers me that much

This isn't a story about a Las Vegas trip, but I hope no one minds me sharing it here.
It's a cute story about Michael's dear late father. I can still see him sitting at slot machines going through coins. Back then the machines didn't accept bills, so you HAD to get change from the change person. Before he played any coins through the machine, he would carefully look at all of the coins (he was an avid coin collector) to make sure that none of the coins were valuable. Any coins that were of value (there were usually a few), would go in a special container in his pocket to be given to his beloved children and grandchildren as Christmas gifts. He always encouraged us to check our coins before we played them, but we never did. Even when he was older and his eyesight was failing and his hands would shake from Parkinson's disease, he would still continue to go through the coins while sitting at the machine.

Shortly after he died, I was playing a 50 cent machine. The machine would not accept the bill I was trying to feed it. I decided to feed the money into the machine next to me and then hand feed the coins into the machine that I wanted to play. I played the coins through the machine, but one coin would not be accepted by the machine. I tossed it back into the coin tray and used other coins. Once again I tried and tried to get the machine to accept that coin, but to no avail. Again I put it to the side and used another coin. Finally it was the last coin I had in the tray. At that time, the image of Dad sitting at the machine looking at the coins came to my mind. I picked up the coin and looked at it. It was an old 50 cent piece from the early 60's that was all silver, not the clad ones they make now and it was in very good condition. It was then that I understood. Dad wanted me to make sure that I didn't "waste" that coin by putting it in the machine. At least that's what I like to think. And yes, I still have that coin.
