It is a little hard to imagine but Luxor is part of the past because it has changed. When it opened there was a laser light show in front of the Sphinx.

Brad,
The Luxor is where Michael and I stayed during our first visit to Las Vegas in 1996.
I remember landing at McCarran and seeing the Luxor in the distance. I thought it was so huge. It was our 15th wedding anniversary and I had reserved one of those minisuites with a jacuzzi near the window. The windows are of course sloped in the pyramid and Michael had to be careful not to hit his heading getting in and out of the jacuzzi. I of course, didn't have that problem since I'm so short. <vbg>
Do you remember the "Nile River" that used to run around the inside of the pyramid? During that trip, Michael and I took a ride in it. It was the last day that the river ride was open. When we passed under a "cave area", some water dropped on me. When we came out of the "cave area", the guide asked if anyone had water dropped on them. I was the only one to say yes. She said it was supposed to be good luck from the Egyptian Gods. My luck in Las Vegas has been pretty good, so maybe there was something to it. <vbg>
I see you mentioned about a light show in front of the pyramid. I remember hearing about that, but by the time we went there in 1996, that had already been discontinued. Anyone have any idea when the laser show was stopped and why?

Lee Ann,
The Lazer show was lame. What in the world did it have to do with pyramids?

I also remember the nile ride, we also did the ride and thought that was lame too. I tought it odd, riding in a boat, all the while they (guides) are telling the story of the nile & Egypt and so on, and then we'd sail past a bunch of clanging slot maching. Sort of killed any chance they had of pulling that one off. IMO

LeeAnn,

The Luxor and Tropicana both had lasar shows. I heard they were turned off because of the airplanes.

The one at Luxor was kind of neat. They sprayed a fan of water into the air and the laser shot pictures onto it. Kind of looked like they were floating above the water out front.

Lee,
I thought that the Nile ride was pretty stupid also, but it was our first trip to Las Vegas and what did we know? Talk Vegas wasn't around then to give us advice. <vbg> It was kind of like the Grand Canal ride only more silly, if that's possible. I do remember the clanging slot machines in the background and you are right, it did kind of ruin it, along with the people coming out of their rooms on the first floor. (Sure glad we didn't stay in one of those rooms).
Glad to hear I didn't miss anything on the laser show. I guess that's why both are no longer part of the Luxor. <vbg>

Jeff,
I missed your reply. Thanks for the explanation on why the displays were turned off. When we were there is 1996, we were told that they no longer had the display, but I never found out why is was discontinued.

I remembered and enjoyed the Nile River ride. History is intersting to me. The stories told by the guides on the boat were interesting. Having the slot sounds and restaurants in the background was an exciting contrast. Imagine being in history class in school with slot machines next door. It was also fun to eat at the Deli and see the boats go by hearing the same story by different guides.

All outdoor laser shows near the airport were banned by the FAA. I took several pictures but all but one were blurred because of wind. Lasers would come out of the eyes of the Sphinx while holograms were projection onto the fan of water. Now the tram is there.

We stayed in Luxor three times but always in a standard room. We were always above floor six so there was not much noise.

I forgot to mention that my first trip to Las Vegas was in September 1993 just before Luxor opened. I too noticed the pyramid from the airport (still on the plane) and wanted to see it. My wife and I returned the following spring and had a room on the East side almost in the exact middle. Back then the shampoo bottles and soap were Egyptian themed. The drink servers in the casino wore wigs which made them look like Egyptians.

Brad,
I always wondered if it was noisy in the standard rooms, since they are open to the atrium and casino below. The mini suites are on the corners of the building and the inclinators were in front of them, so we weren't really affected by the noise. It was however, a really long walk from the inclinator to our room. Didn't mind it so much in the morning, but it seemed even longer at night. <vbg>

Did you do the King Tut tomb thing while you were there? I liked that better than the boat ride. I forgot about sitting at the Nile Deli and seeing the boats go by.

I've heard for years that the Luxor would be forever doomed because of the pyramid style. Heard it was "bad luck" to try to make a replica. Has anyone heard this before?

Wasn't the bad luck thing the same with the lions at the MGM with Asian tourists?

Gail,
I never heard anything about it being "bad luck" to make a replica of a pyramid (although it wouldn't suprise me). I do remember hearing that the Asian visitors thought it was bad luck to walk through the lion on their way into the casino at the MGM. I did get to see the old lion on our first visit to Las Vegas, but I like the new one much better. I thought the old one looked like it was made of paper mache.

Hi Lee Ann

Yes, I walked through King Tutankhamun's tomb twice. It is a replica of how Howard Carter found it 1922. The original had been unchanged for over 4,000 years. Every other tomb had been plundered by robbers. For most of recorded history Tut's tomb was there under the sand. Most of the hotel feels like Las Vagas with an Egyptian theme, but in the tomb it is easy to imagine being in Egypt.

Gail,
I believe in that "bad luck" thing at the Luxor. I have never been able to win there, and feel doomed to lose at BJ. I could not do anything during our stay there, and as such just sat there while Lee Ann played on subsequent visits. Besides their comps are lousy.
