   Dressing for LV
   Dressing for LV
Roadrunner got me to thinking, maybe this would be a good place to find out where our members stand on this issue.
My first trip to LV was as a child, in the 70's and I remember how everyone got all dressed up for the evening. I remember a dress my mom wore one night, almost had a hard time beleiving it was mom!
People really dressed for the evening.
FAST FORWARD to 2000
Now except the very few places, allow just about anything. Almost like a beach resort, without the ocean. Sandals, riped jean shorts and a Indians tee shirt with a big ol mustard stain in the front, and you in like flint.
Don't know if I'd want to "dress" every evening, but it sure added some class to the trip! I know I'd be much more eagar to "dress" for the evening, if everyone else did, so I wouldn't stand out in the crowd.

What's everyone elses idea on this?
Speak up, lets hear it!

Lee,

I really wish I had been going to Vegas 30 years ago or whenever it was that people 'dressed' for the casino. I'd love to see that return. Problem is, the casino's now want to market to the masses and that ain't who the masses are!

Will, I always joke about the indians shirt with the mustard stain because that was what I was wearing when JMT and I were denied access to Emerils for lunch<G>
It's true!
But, When I take my wife with me I always take a suit and tie. On Sat nights in Las Vegas I don't care what anyone else is wearing. We always get dressed up and go to a first class restaurant and a first class show and then hit the casinos.
Sure there are lots of people in shorts and jeans. But I have found we get very nice treatment and comments from the dealers and other people. On Sat nights there are still a lot of people who get dressed nicely.
Just go to the Rio and look at the people waiting in line to get into the night club. They are much younger than I am but they are dressed nicely.
This is a tradition of ours that I won't ever change. Las Vegas is still a classy place if you want it to be.

Kind of odd this way, but I like it when others are nicely dressed but I myself only dress to be clean and comfortable unless I have a command performance at weddings or funerals.

But it is nice to see people dressing up in the evenings in the casinos/

I took my nephew and his fiance out on the town one night when they were in their mid 20's and both were national models so they dressed the best and I did notice all the looks and comments they received from the pits and tables and all the places in between.

Then we left the El Cortez and ........ nahhhhh, only kidden anout the El Cortez!

But that night convinced me that dressing well was definitely appreciated by one and all.

But I, myself, comtinue to dress for comfort.

Dress me clean and comb my hair, and I'm out there feeling pretty good inside.

I'm split on this issue. While I like being casual (shorts and nice top), I do like to dress up a little for the shows. Slacks and top. I feel too out of place wearing anything fancier. I would enjoy dressing up, but I hate having to take extra "stuff" in my luggage. It's already heavy and over-packed!

54 Carol, I'm with you. I used to take clothes to dress up in the evenings but why? Hardly anyone else did. I use the extra suitcase space for my Brew & Go coffee maker. Clean & neat & comfortable is my criteria.

Agree completely with the both of you. For shows, a nice pair of slacks and top accented with some jewelry. Any dressier does seem out of place anymore.

In my husbands "single days", he and a buddy used to go to Vegas. This would have been in the mid 70's (disco days). They would take in a show each night they were there. They would take a sport jacket or two to wear to the shows. Don't think they wore ties, think they had the "Saturday Night Fever" thing going on!!! (g) Anyway he tells a story about going to a show one night, and the arrogant guy (in a tux himself) who seated them, actually made fun of them for being dressed up. No doubt that was the end of the sport jackets.

All,
Just got back from LV, and at 108+ degrees, a suit & tie was not an option. At midnight however, it went all the way down to a chilly 99 degrees.....but it's a dry heat! LOL I swore the next person that said that, while I'm melting waiting for valet was gonna wear a crutch! <s>

While I am there I wear a sportcoat night and day. If I am going to the better restaurants(As I usually enjoy doing), I wear a shirt and tie as well.

As I don't walk the strip, and I spend my time indoors, the heat thing doesn't really affect me except standing outside waiting for a cab.

I did go to Las Vegas in the 70's and people dressed up BECAUSE it was Las Vegas. Now, I long for the days when people enjoyed dressing up and looking nice while being out on the town.

This last trip, the 11-15th of May, we ate at some very fine dining establishments(Charlie Palmer's Steakhouse, Aureole, Mon Ami, Olives) and it was nice to be out with people that enjoyed dressing up. The women looked great in the cocktail dresses and the guys wore suits or sportcoats.

If we hadn't been dressed up I know we would not have been allowed into the Foundation Room at the House of Blues. BTW, what a great bar that is. Best view of the strip I have ever seen.

Anyway, I will always continue to dress in my sportcoat when there. It makes it easy to carry everything also(Cigs, sunglasses, etc.), kinda of an upscale fanny pack.

Marc, I'm with you on this one. We dress up and go out for "a night on the town" and we don't go outside except to catch a cab.
The only thing we differ on is using the coat as a fanny pack. I don't smoke<G>
BTW, you should see Lee's fanny pack. That's where he stuffs all his table winnings when he is playing the tables<G>

We get out and walk a LOT during the day, so that is a pretty casual time for us. At night I do dress up, but not TOO formal (casual dress & sandals). My husband is a khakis and sports shirt kind of guy. We are in between the mustard stained t-shirt and coat & tie groups.
