Two of the most prestigious names in the art world, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and the State Hermitage Museum of Russia, announced plans Friday for an ambitious project in Las Vegas, including a seven-story museum.
Construction of the museum has already begun near The Venetian and is expected to be completed by spring. The Guggenheim and Hermitage will be tenants, leasing spaces from The Venetian. But the Guggenheim has control of the exhibitions.
The gallery's first exhibit will be "Masterpieces from the Hermitage and Guggenheim Collections," featuring 40 works by such crowd-pleasing artists as Monet, Chagall, Pissarro, Renoir, Gauguin and Cezanne, along with modernist works by Leger, Delaunay, Bonnard, Matisse, Kupka, Derain, Picabia and Kandinsky.
The museum building will open with "The Art of the Motorcycle," an exhibit put together by the Guggenheim. It debuted two years ago at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, and features more than 120 early- to late-model motorcycles. Architect Frank O. Gehry designed a new installation for the exhibit.
The project begs the question of whether tourists will pony up the projected $15 fee to see art at a Las Vegas resort. Thomas Krens, Guggenheim's director, is convinced it will work.
