Tall columns go up in Las Vegas. (5/4/02) Work continues at a feverish pace in Las Vegas. Ten beams were added this week in the area between the Sahara and Hilton Resorts. Concrete was added to the crossheads of the tallest columns of the Las Vegas Monorail This section of track will rise to 50 feet to cross over a pedestrian bridge at the Convention Center. At the precast yard in North Las Vegas they have been casting one to three beams a day for the LO4 line segment, which runs from the Convention Center Station along Paradise Road to Sands Avenue behind the Chamber of Commerce building. Shafts in front of the Convention Center are being drilled right now. Some utility relocation work remains in front of Hilton before the station and guideway constuction can start. Work is beginning on the switch at the Sahara Station. Shafts for the Operations Maintenance and Storage Facility (OMSF) building are complete as well as some work on the perimeter. Subgrade is being prepared for the building slab. Builders are waiting for a building permit from Clark County for the remainder of the structure.

Hi Beth, Had to go to the airport a couple of weeks ago, and was very surprised by the progress made on the Monorail. There is some of the track supports finished, and it is especially noticed just north of the Hilton, along Paradise. That's going to be really GOOD! Have to go to the airport again on Tuesday, will check out progress.......bet you and Fred will be the first TalkVegas riders......

I think we should get something going here - The first Talk Vegas member to ride the new monorail gets what?? Two Talk Vegas pins, bumper sticker, 2003 Las Vegas calendar or what. Las Vegas residents should be disqualified as it would be too easy for them to win. The home of record for the winner should be from out-of-town. The winner should also be registered in a Las Vegas hotel/casino. Comments please. Wendell
Looks like it will be some time before we discover who will be the first TalkVegas member to ride the new LV monorail. Mandalay Resorts Group is opposing the construction and it appears there will be at least an eight-month delay. Amuses me that Mandalay Bay Resorts objects on the basis that it will block the view of their marquee and hotels. Do they really think their own monorail running from Excalibur, Luxor and Mandalay Bay and back is attractive to their properties?
