Some ways that have worked for me to get free upgrades (in no particular order):

* Ask nicely
* Ask nicely and be a member of the hotel's frequent-stay club (e.g. Hilton HHonors for the PPE hotels)

If you want something really nice, like a jacuzzi room, ask REALLY nicely and offer a picture of a dead president. I've found that a picture of Andrew Jackson can get a jacuzzi room for a couple of nights at the finest LV hotels.

MJ, I think the key is in the specificity of the request. I've always asked for "a nice room with a jacuzzi" as opposed to "a nice upgrade." Of course, the jacuzzi rooms are always nice rooms. I've not been cheated yet....

MJ, Most hotels do not want anyone making a scene. Therefore I doubt that a desk employee would take your $20 and then say there is nothing they can do. Can you imagine that employee trying to explain to a supervisor and the security people that were summoned when you got loud and complained so everyone could hear you while you demanded your $20 back. <G> Most of them just politely refuse the tip and say thank you.

I was able to get an upgrade to a jacuzzi suite on my last stay at Mandalay Bay. Laid a $20 on the counter that the clerk could see but kept my hand on it as I asked if he could get me into something with a jacuzzi. When he put the registration up for me to sign, I asked if he had been able to do my any good. He said I was in an executive suite. When I slid the registration back to him, the $20 went with it.

Now this sounds like fun!
I don't need a fancy room, or a jacuzzi in my room. I need a clean, comfortable, and quite room. Where the drapes block all the sun, and the maid doesn't come darging in at the ungodly hour of noon!
That being said, I'm thinking this could be sort of good sport on my next trip. This next trip, I'll be staying 2 nights at a differnt hotel then the Flamingo (hotel still unchoosen, probably end up at Paris). My sister is also traveling. I think I'll try the tip thing and see if I get any better room. I'm sure Paris has something better then standard rooms to offer. Then compare to what Sandy got, without a tip. Sounds like a plan to anyone? <S>
My idea of an upgrade is not a better view. That has never impressed me. But for $20, (and I'll risk more then that in LV) I'll see what happens!
