For the fourth year in a row, Nevada has earned the dubious distinction of being the most dangerous state in America according to an article in CNNMoney. The survey ranked states according to rates of murder, rape, robbery, assault, burglary and auto theft in 2005.

Other states include #9-California, #11-Texas, #14-Washington, #21-Illinois, #23-Ohio, #26-Pennsylvania and #31-New York. The District of Columbia was not included in the survey.

I suppose I should be happy at 23.

What are the safest states? I'm going to guess places like, Wyoming, S Dakota, N Dakota.

Those were pretty good guesses, Senator!

South Dakota was #45, Wyoming was #46, and North Dakota was #50 again. FWIW, New Hampshire was #47, Maine was #48, and Vermont was #49. I was surprised that New Mexico was #2 and Arizona #3.

I wonder where Louisiana and Mississippi were - I heard crime rates have gone up considerably since the 2005 hurricanes.

Louisiana went from 2 to 10
Mississippi went from 21 to 24

They actually use a formula to come up with these rankings. It's kinda simple, but not straightforward facts.

This wasn't an actual survey of stats by CNN. Morgan Quitno Press does lots of little reports that mean little other water cooler chat. For instance, here are some of their other rankings...

Most liveable state, New Hampshire
Healthiest state, Vermont
Smartest state, Vermont
Most improved state, Florida

Safest city, Brick, NJ
Most dangerous city, St Louis, MO

I can't believe NY was #31. I guess all that acreage up there in the Adirondacks, and tons and tons of small towns bring down our average.

It's my beleif, they can make those numbers say anything they want them to say, by just tweeking the criteria a little.
I'm sorry auto theft, doesn't rate up there with murder and rape, or even assult. So why not add people that run the toll booths, or maybe people who fish without the proper licence?
My guess, someone, somewhere had an agenda!

What is it about a '91 Accord? Easy to get into or hotwire?

I would have to believe that anti theft devices are getting smarter than the street thug car thief. The report I saw mentioned that almost 20% of the cars stolen were ones where the owner left the keys in the car. Also it should be noted that car thefts are down from last year across the board. Las Vegas was on a upward trend in the ranking, it's population growing rapidly, so it was destined to hit #1 even because it's numbers weren't likely to drop as much as the rest of the country.

I wish the list went beyond top 10 cars. I wonder about the cars that are often pimpped out like the H2, Escalade, BMW, etc. and where they rank on the list.
