What Does This Mean To You?
Living in LV, I see a lot of gaming news. I haven't been anywhere else in a long time. Is gaming news growing in all parts of the country? When I lived back east, we hardly ever had gaming news in the newspaper or on television.

Anyway, year after year, there are more and more casinos being built throughout the country.

Constantly, there are people against ALL gambling and then there are people who are only against the Indian casinos.

Note that the Mississippi Gaming Commission oversees 29 casinos. The casinos employ nearly 40,000 workers and five new casino projects are in the works that would increase that number. They are the Hard Rock Casino in Biloxi, Margarita Casino in Waveland, Isle of Capri-Coahoma County, U S Development in Tunica and an expansion of Rainbow Casino in Vicksburg.

That's a lot of jobs!!

Personally, I like having all these casinos going up. It's good competition and helps the gambler. From an economic viewpoint, it also seems to be helping with all the tax revenue.

I don't think we'll get too many on this board who morally oppose all gambling. But, is this a potential problem?

So, what's the scoop? What does this all mean to you?

Gail,
I see no one took up this topic and I'm a little disapointed.
JMT, shame on you! <VBG>
This is a Las vegas BB, so there will be more pro then con here about gambling. Although, after spending 9 days in LV, you can't help but notice some of the down sides of gambling. There is probably not one person on this BB, that has not seen the sad side of gaming.
The little kids that are told to stay and wait (and left unattended) while mommy/daddy gambles. Or the just bad behaviour of the lossers at the tables. Or the woman yelling at her husband for loosing his entire paycheck....again. The Drunk & disorderly. As much as I enjoy gambling, I also see the other side of the coin.
If there are winners, there will be loosers.

Gail,

I think the people who are against the Indian casinos are mostly concerned about the same thing that bothers me. They don't have to play by the same rules that the other casinos do. I may be wrong about this but I remembering reading something to this effect a while back.

Living in Ohio, I've seen casino gambling get defeated on the ballot here. Our last Governor fought very hard against it. What happens, we all drive to Indiana, Windsor and now Detroit and support their economies. Doesn't make much sense to me. We do have horse tracks and I think they spent a LOT of money to help defeat it.

Jeff, I know what you mean about how the Indian casinos don't have to follow the same rules. And this doesn't really bother me so much. Although I'm not an expert on history, I do know that the Indians sure did get a raw deal. So...it does not bother me to see the Indians Reservations making money to finally be able (allowed) to take care of their own.

I also see where that the states that do not have gambling, the people go to other states to contribute to the economy. Absolutely. However, thank goodness, the states always have the choice to allow gambling in their own state (giving competition) and strengthening their own economy.

Lee, Good post. The down side of gambling really does bother me a lot. But I do believe that even if gambling was totally banned, we still would have gambling. Those who are compulsive are going to find a way to be compulsive- one way or another.

Re: the children, I firmly believe that everyone (adult or adult parent) should be held accountable for their actions of non-actions.

Like anywhere, we have laws here that are not taken seriously. When the casinos break the law (re: curfews, etc.), they are not punished or not punished enough.

Just like the gun laws, we do not need more laws. We need to enforce the laws we have. And enforce them fairly.

Good seeing you, Sue, and Sandy again. Now, looking forward to October!

I think Jeff brought up an interesting point about the money behind the opposition to gambling. It's no secret that the opposition to the Indian casinos in California gets their major funding from the Nevada casinos.

Personally, I'd like to see California set up a 2 or 3 block gambling strip right at the state line in Lake Tahoe. Nevada is the Silver State, but in the Reno/Tahoe area, it's mainly California's silver, and I would love to see some of it stay here<g>.

Living in South Central KS, (Wichita) you really have to look to find any gaming news.
For the most part, gambling is heavely campaigned against. Our city leaders wanted a new, large, glamorous hotel to attract tourism <vbg>. The major players wanted to put in a casino. From the local reaction, you would have thought that Carrie Nation, that hatchet wielding, bar smashing, mad woman was alive and well.
We do have casino's further North in Topeka and several of my co-workers take the free bus for a day. We haven't been and don't really plan on going. It's the Vegas experience we enjoy. Not just the gaming but the shows, lights, and 24 hr. action. Esp. since we work 12 hr night shifts. Last night Shelley said "I wish we were in Vegas". As it was 2 a.m. I new what she ment, it was my lunch time too.
