Dealer and 12 Others Arrested in Cheating Scam
Wed July 12 2000
Police were ready to arrest a dealer and 12 others Thursday as they attempted to carry out an elaborate cheating scam at the Claridge Casino Hotel in Atlantic City. Two of the cheaters played in a mini-baccarat pit to record cards dealt by Tam Nhut Ho until it was time for Ho to shuffle the deck. Ho then faked shuffling to allow nine co-conspirators to begin playing with knowledge of the cards that had already dealt. "Unfortunately, there are dealers who want to try to work with people and make a quick buck," comments Katherine Lyons, Division of Gaming Enforcement spokeswoman. "Hopefully, we can weed them out by catching them before they do it, like we did in this case." The cheats were charged with theft by deception and conspiracy and face penalties of up to 10 years in prison.

This scam seems as though it would have been so easy for casino security to detect. Once again, it appears that those who cheat don't seem to be the smartest gamblers around.
