A few things happening in Detroit. The Greektown casino now has Live poker. Only 5 tables at present, but an expansion is planned to 18 tables this month. Mostly Texas Holdem with lots of action. The top game is currently $30/$60. Craps players can find $5 tables during the day on both floors. But the VP there is still poor with no decent paytables noted.
MGM has a new Video Poker room on the 2nd floor with all sorts of new machines. I saw quite a few Double Pay Poker machines in Ten Play and Five Play versions. Then there are many Triple Play-Ten Play machines. And down on the 1st floor you will find the Fifty Play machines. But I didn't seeany great paytables.
Over at the Motor City, they still have the Craps Promotion ongoing. Make all six numbers as the shooter and you get $4000. 72 people have done it since last July and as of today, 28 prizes remain. Most of the time, the tables are $10 minimum due to the crowd. No new VP machines at Motor City, but they still have the best Triple Play 25 cent machines with 9/6 Jacks. And just a few days ago, machine 41072 dealt me the Royal for 12000 quarters. On January 1, I saw a woman get dealt the Royal on machine 41120, also for 12000 quarters. Both on the 1st floor.
And at all 3 casinos, the nickel players have run the Wheel of Fortune jackpot up to over $830000.
We were at Greektown on New Years Eve Day. Didn't come home winners, but had a great time!!
There is a good deal around here for going to Greektown. Every Monday and Thursday there is a bus (always new looking & clean) that picks up in Wapak, Lima & Findlay. You pay $25 to get on. When you get to Greektown, the casino gives you back the $25 in coin and also gives you a $5 coupon for lunch in one of two of their restaurants. One of the restaurants is just a snack bar, but the second (Alley's Grill, I think it was called) is a very nice restaurant and you only have to spend an extra buck or two along with the coupon for a nice lunch. Leaves around 7 AM in the morning (varies with which town you board in) and gets you back around 6 pm.
No Omaha 8 or better at this time, but talk is they will have 1 table at $6/$12 when they open the bigger poker room on the 2nd floor. And the $30/$60 Holdem has died out already and this week is at $20/$40. So right now, just Holdem and Seven card Stud.
CN, I take it that all three casinos are in Detroit. I know Susan had told me about the Greek Town Casino so I'm assuming the others must be fairly close for comptitive reasons. I haven't been back to Detroit since my sister passed away in 1997. I'm assuming that Detroit has allowed limited casinos as a way to generate revenues for the city? We have 21 Tribal Run casinos in Minnesota. Minneapolis and St Paul have considered state runed casinos as a way to generate income, but the anti gambling and Tribal lobbies always shoot it down.
The voters of Michigan passed the law allowing the Detroit casinos. The state takes a big cut, then the city takes a cut. The ballot was worded in such a way that only 3 are permitted. One is MGM, one is Greektown, and one is the Motor City. They are not close together; in fact its about a mile between each one. All 3 are so called temporary casinos (although quite large), as the original plan was to build Vegas style mega-casinos along the riverfront. The most recent change I recall is that only MGM will be permitted on the river.
Now gambling in Detroit has some drawbacks I wont mention as not to offend anyone, but all three places have plenty of table games and slots. Only Greektown currently has live poker.
CN, thanks for the info. I guessed that the state and or city wouldn't have approved it if there wasn't something in it for them. It only makes sense. As I said in my earlier post, Minnesota has toyed with the idea as well. It seems to come and go with the seasons. Minnesota is second only to one other state (can't remember name) in per captia number of people that go to Las Vegas. It's probably some law that we have to go at least once per year. If you're married with teen-agers, you have to go twice.
I'm sure I wouldn't recognize the downtown area anymore. It's been a lot of years. My family and friends all are in the burbs.
