It has been a long while since we have stayed in Reno! We at one time stayed often at the "ElDorado", and my wife once worked at Harrah's and Fitzgeralds. Since we discovered Las Vegas, we have been back once about fifteen years ago. Daisy D. speaks of four Casino/Hotels in another post, but I wondered what the others now are like?? There seem to be a number of inexpensive flights from Portland (2/nites,$139) and I would maybe like to try it again? Any advice??
Downtown, the Fitz hasn't really changed in the last 15 years, but Harrah's now has an outdoor plaza where the Nevada Club and Harold's used to be. The ElDorado is connected to Circus by the Silver Legacy, a nice "Las Vegas style" indoor mall.... without most of the shops<g>.
I spend most of my Reno time at the Peppermill, Atlantis or the Reno Hilton (old MGM/Ballys) .. mainly because that's where I can find good video poker and good choices in crazy nickel video slots. All three have nice rooms and good dining choices; my favorite buffet would be at Peppermill (where I also want to try the Steak House), and Atlantis has the best coffee shop IMO.
I'm kind of running blind here ...any specific questions on gambling, rooms, shows, dining?
Personally, I prefer the south Lake Tahoe region. Not as many choices for casino's but the area is wonderful. So much more to do than wander around in a casino. If worst comes to worst we can always drive north for a day of gambling in Reno.
Doug, Tahoe is beautiful! But the gambling options just aren't there in terms of decent VP. My trip is to gamble, so if the gambling isn't any good, then why go.
I'd suggest at the very least a day trip to Tahoe. The drive up is even nice, so long as it's not mid winter!
If you're going strictly for gambling, then Reno is by far the better choice. Since we usually go for vacation and don't gamble all that much, S. Lake Tahoe is the better choice for us. We enjoy the scenery, it used to be possible to find decent VP but it's been awhile since we looked, and there are a lot more non-gaming activities for us.
I guess it just depends on what you're looking for. If it's gambling, then Reno wins hands down. If it's for R&R with a little gambling thrown in, we prefer S. Lake Tahoe.
I also prefer Reno for the gambling, the less expensive rooms, less expensive meals and shorter lines for just about anything.
Having said that, I'm looking forward to working in Lake Tahoe in a couple of weeks. I've seen the scenery, so I guess I'll have to check out the VP<g>.
HI, I have staid in reno several times and like it alot. I have stayed at Harrahs, Eldorado, Peppermill, Golden Phoenix, circus Circus, and The Sands. You might want to check out this website that i know of that searches numerous websites for the best hotel prices. If you e-mail me i can give that too you. I dont know if we are allowed to post web addresses on this site or not.
Out of all the places i have stayed i like The Peppermill and Harrahs the best. The rooms at Harrahs are a little small, compared to the peppermill but they have been recently renovated. The last room at had at Harrahs was really nice.
Alilouisell, I'll second Beth's Welcome ...and I'd love to hear how the Golden Phoenix differs from the old Flamingo. Have they changed the rooms or gaming area much?
The golden Phoenix rooms are ok. The walls are paper thin and you can hear everything. Supposedly the rooms have been updated since the take over from the Flamingo. They aren't bad but there defiently are better places.
There were lots of the new slots and lots of table games. I remember being in the Flamingo casino area right before it closed and it definetley is different. When we stayed the casino had just opened and they were offering triple points. That was nice. we managed to rack up quite a bit.
i really dont recomend staying there to anyone unless you get a super cheap rate. Theres other places that are much better for the money.
