Lee, Your "five shiney nickels" note in Transportation prompted me to write this.

Last night we (Joe, Theresa, and I) went to Jerry's Nugget for a bite to eat. I noticed a couple of new waiters since the last time we were there.

We sat at the counter thinking we would be served quicker than in the dining room. Usually this is true but not last night with the extra customers- I guess due to the holiday weekend.

There were plenty of seats open at the counter so we got three seats together. Waited a couple of minutes and the server came over and asked if we wanted drinks. Theresa wanted a ginger ale but they didn't have any at the counter and the waiter said he would have to get it from the bar. So instead, Theresa ordered a sprite.

The waiter was clean cut but just didn't seem that he should be a waiter. Had a little "air" about him.

Ordering begins... "Have you decided on what you want to order?"

Joe asks, "Can we get the Caesars Salad as an appetizer and then order our meals after?"

The waiter says, "No, we only have the Caesars Salad as a meal and don't have it as an appetizer."

Joe tries to explain that we want the Caesars Salad before we order our meals. The waiter repeats that we can't have it. Finally, I say, "We would like to order the Caesars Salad MEAL- NOW. We want it as soon as possible. Then we will order more later." It took about 5 more minutes for Joe and I to explain to the waiter to BRING US A CAESARS SALAD NOW when he finally caught on.

The Caesars Salad was just okay. We were going to order the Oriental Salad but they didn't have it on the menu last night. JN's menu changes daily.

After the CS, we ordered an open steak sandwich on top of two pieces of grilled garlic bread with french fries for Joe and I to split.

Then we ordered a bowl of chicken, rice florentine soup. The waiter says, "Do you want the soup now?" Joe says, "As soon as you can bring it." The waiter says, "I'll just wait to bring it with the steak. It will be better that way."

DUH! I just love waiters that want to do things their way and not the customer's way.

The steak was very good size for about $6.89 but I asked for it medium and it came out RARE. Being in the food service for over 30 years, I opted to eat it rare rather than send it back and have them kill it.

Theresa ordered a roast beef sandwich on white bread with mayo only (we told the waiter NO lettuce, tomatos, or pickles) and mashed potatoes with butter and NO gravy.

The roast beef sandwich came out and the mashed potatoes had gravy on them which the waiter did notice right away. He said, "Oh, this is not right. Let me take care of this for you." Which he did. Theresa and I looked at the roast beef sandwich that was LOADED with lettuce and then looked at each other and laughed. Theresa doesn't like to complain so she pulled the half head of lettuce out of the sandwich.

Now the tipping part...

The nice gentleman sitting to the right of Theresa finishes his meal and sticks a one dollar bill sticking way up high in a strawberry margherita promotional table tent. He says to the waiter, "bye now, have a good night."

A couple of minutes later the waiter comes back to clear away the dishes and says something like, "Oh just great!!" Theresa being such a concerned person says to him, "What's the matter?" The waiter replies, "Oh I just love being stiffed!!"

Theresa says, "Your tip is right there" and points to it. The waiter says, "Guess I was mistaken."

Lucky for him I wasn't a JN boss.

Finished the meal off with a lemon meringue pie for Theresa and a strawberry shortcake for me and Joe. I keep forgetting that their strawberry shortcake is a pre-made white cake with a few strawberries and loads of artificial whipped cream. I will remember not to order it next time. Theresa's lemon meringue pie was good but VERY lemony.

So anyway Lee, I'll bet you a shiny nickel that the next time we go back to JN last night's waiter will no longer be there.

Jerrys Nugget used to have television commercials that raved about their dessers. I'm surprised they would spend big advertising dollars focused on such a small aspect if the quality wasn't there.

Gail,
A very interesting story to say the least!

This is the coffee shop we met for dinner about a year back? Then I thought the service and the food was suprisingly high quality for the low price. If I recall the service was swift and the place seemed very clean.
Sorry to hear about the waiter. The waiter would have been let go, on the spot if I was in charge. #1 rule, don't complain to the customers....ever!

Larry, I did tip him 15% because he did ask if we wanted drinks, he brought the food out, he came over a couple of times to ask if everything was okay, and he did ask if we wanted desserts. Had it not been for the soup thing or the tip whine, I would have tipped 20%. Any waiter that is friendly for "my" benefit or does anything extra for me gets more than a 20% tip. He got the minimum because of his stupidity <g>.

I think if I felt that I didn't want to tip a wait person, I might even ask the management in the middle of the service for a change of wait person. Maybe this is the way to go. What do you think about this?

Joe, JN has very pretty desserts. I have not sampled many of them but they look to me like the desserts I've seen at the food shows. They look to be pre-made and at the food shows the cakes have lines in them where they are to be cut.

The other night at JN, I noticed the workers stocking the dessert case. They were coming out of the kitchen with the deserts in big square pink boxes.

Talking about good desserts, years ago we used to eat at the Stardust Buffet. I always enjoyed their desserts- banana cream pie, Boston cream pie, etc. They did not look like the pre-made stuff at the food shows. Do you know if they made their own desserts there? They sure did look and taste it.

Lee, Yes, this is the place where we had the prime rib, I think.

For the most part, we have gotten good food and service there for the price. I'd say 8 out of 10 for good food. To me, consistency in food quality is the most important and then service.

Actually, cleanliness is the most important and I did notice that the place is still very clean.

Gail,
If the service IS poor I would ask for another server, if another one is available. If not I do let them know on my way out. However I try to give him 0r her the benifit of the doubt first.

I don't ask for another server. With my luck I'll get the servers best friend and There will be something extra in my meal, I didn't order.

D.A.G. and all, I have been in the food service for over 30 years and I have to say that I am more than glad that I have never seen anyone do anything to a customer's food or drink. However, from what I have seen on tv and from what I have heard in all my years, I would never send anything back to be recooked or "fixed" up. I would rather have them take it off my bill- which I have done before.

I am very particular about my food and drink. After a few Buds, I don't think about it as much <vbg> but sober, I would like to prepare my own food and drink.

Ever remember "childhood" memories when we used to sit and chat and drink and smoke. And then you grab a swig of a "soda" with all the cigarette butts in the can?

Lee, remember those days <lol>? It's just not as easy to get over something like that at my age. Age makes me more queezy.

Gail,
I hear ya!
I think when you say you've been in food service for 30 years, it makes us all sound old! LOL But seriously, your looking at it from a differnt end too. being a short order cook and a prep-cook for a few years myself, I've never done anything to other peoples food (other then burn it by accident), but I've seen others do it!
No I will not make waves in a restuarant unless all the food has already been served, if I still intend to eat there.
Actully, I think your more a clean "freak" then I am. Which is why I think we get along so well. If you say a place is alright, I know it's alright! <s> Why else would we follow you to Jerry's nugget? <G>

Lee, I'd have to say that I would love to meet the owner of Jerry' Nugget. He/she is probably as fanatic as I am <lol>!! When you hear "word of mouth" about anything, you always like to see for yourself.

At Showboat one night, a couple of people mentioned that JN got the cleanest kitchen award for something or other for the kitchen. Everytime I go there, I look around, and damn, that place is clean!! I always like to give credit when credit is due. So far I haven't been able to top it.

Lee, >>clean "freak"<< ya know, to me, it's a respect thing. If somebody doesn't do the right thing it's disrespect. Honesty and respect are high priority with me.

Whenever I mention JN to anyone, they say, "Why would you go to that place?" I say,

"Well, the place is clean, the restaurant is clean, they have rock and roll background music that will not blow your socks off, the security in the parking lot and in the casino is very good, and the slots aren't that bad. What more can I ask for????

Gail,
You know that is the one thing that really sticks in my mind about Jerry's Nugget. It was clean, and the people where nice. I know I dropped a couple of hundred down the tubes on the bar poker machine that night. But I had a good time! I would have never gone there if you hadn't recomended it.
Also Valet was excelent too.

Mom!!!
I wish I could have been there that night! I would have been furious about the poor service at JN. The way I tip is like this:

Great Service = 20 percent tip,
OK Service = 15 percent tip, and NOT-so-GOOD Service = 10 percent tip...

I can't believe that you gave him 15 percent. That was generous of you. Well, maybe he will learn how to be more conscious of the customers' requests... OH Well,...

Joe
