They claim the Africanized bees are now as far north as Mesquite. The "powers that be" are becoming more concerned. If the bees have not reached the strip yet, they hope to get a head start by taking some steps. The following was extracted from the LVRJ:
............a task force was formed this month to develop a universal strategy for agriculture officials and emergency responders. Among the ideas the task force will consider is putting traps at locations along the Strip and the downtown area to reduce the potential for bees attacking tourists.
The traps -- cardboard hives with a single entry hole in the bottom -- contain a small vial of a sweet-smelling pheromone, secretions from a queen bee that attract scouts and worker bees to the hive.
After a swarm has congregated in the trap, specialists can tape the entry hole and collect the trap in a plastic bag, a combination that eventually smothers them.
Until another solution looks more promising, O'Brien said Nevada will probably continue with a common strategy for dealing with killer bees that the task force is developing....................
I'm sure the locals are a lot more savvy about what's happening than we tourists from afar.
