   "Going for Broke" on Lifetime
   "Going for Broke" on Lifetime
Did anyone see the telefilm "Going for Broke" on Lifetime last night? It starred Delta Burke as a woman who becomes hooked on slot and video poker machines and it totally ruins her life. I thought it was really good and gave me something to think about the next time I go gambling. I certainly don't ever want to end up behaving like her.

I won't spoil the ending for anyone, but I was amazed at what a downbeat ending it had.

I'd be interested in knowing what other people thought of this movie.

(If you didn't catch it, they're replaying it on Friday night this week.)

I saw the movie also. I almost didn't watch it since it was on Lifetime and, most of the time, they can be predictable movies. They showed it twice and I watched both times. I don't think it was the production of the movie that drew me in, I think it was the topic. Not many movies that address the problem gambling issue. I didn't even realize it was Delta Burke until 1/2 way through. I am guessing she has had plenty of nip and tuck work. Her character's emotional roller coaster with the highs and lows of winning/losing can be understood by anyone that enjoys gambling and that adrenaline rush. This movie is supposed to take place in Reno (don't know if it was really filmed there). They are showing it again on Lifetime on Friday 7/18, at 9:00 pm Eastern time.

Irishmick - It's the Lifetime Network on cable TV. As Itch said, it will be on at 9:00PM this Friday Oregon time.

Itch - I agree with you - most of the Lifetime movies I've seen have been very predictable but this one certainly wasn't. And the topic certainly drew me in too. I couldn't believe it when she gave back her jackpot in less than an hour. Truly amazing. --Mike

Mike,

Thanks for the tip. We watched the movie Friday night. It was very sad and easy to understand how one becomes addicted. I guess when gambling becomes more than recreational one should steer clear of casinos. The former owner of the Philadelphia Eagles lost his shirt in AC. The last I heard he died while living in one room somewhere in the Philadelphia area.

I didn't enjoy it at all; I only watched the whole, depressing thing because I mis-read Mike's post and thought he said it had an uplifting end. frown Actually, the only way I could keep watching was to crank up the laptop and play WinPoker ...only cost me 300 credits<g>.

I wholeheartly agree with Daisy!!
I did tape the program and last night I decided to watch it...I watched +/- one half hour and then turned it off. I have gambled almost all of my life and visit a Casino about eight times a year. Three times in "Las Vegas", two times in "Laughlin", and maybe three times at a local Indian Casino. I am not a problem gambler and do not lose a great deal; certainly no more than I can afford! I am a recovered alcoholic (dry for 26 years) but have no problem with others that drink. I did smoke pot when in the sixties and still can be around it with my personel feelings intact. It (pot) dosn't bother me either!
For some ungodly reason? this show made me uncomfortable...Maybe, I just pictured what could be?? Anyway I turned it off...... confused  smile

Irish,
Sometimes it takes movies like this to relize we should all count our blessings. While I won't "fess up" to all my faults here on the BB (LOL) there are many times when each one of us could have made bad choices in our lives.
Another movie I hated was "Leaving Las Vegas" now that was a depressing movie.
BTW, congratulations on the 26 years! I admire you for your honesty and commitment.
