I am so blown away by this I don't where to start. It's a scam that helps charities. Well, maybe it's not a true scam. I just don't know what to think about it.

The historic Welcome To Las Vegas sign on the strip is known world wide as a very famous landmark. There is another new one on Boulder Highway, but that's another story.

Here's the deal. You can buy one of the yellow lights that surround the outside of the sign. But it gets better. Young Electric Sign Company, better known as YESCO, replaces the bulbs daily (or several times a week) so they go through almost 90 bulbs a day. You can pick the day that your bulb lit the sign. And of course, when you buy a bulb, a portion of the money goes to charity.

These bulbs will sell in gift shops all over town for a retail price of $99. But wait that's not all. As a special treat for locals, we can buy the bulbs for only $39. Now suppose you want the bulb from the #1 position. Or maybe you want one from the lucky #21 position. Or maybe you are creative and want the lucky #7 and #11 positions. That's gonna cost a little more. The lucky 7 come 11 set sells for only $79. The lucky #21 bulb will sell for $89. And the #1 position bulb for a specific day speak $99. And there's more. There is also an option for a $10 upgrade. What (may you ask) does one get for the extra $10? NOTHING, except the satisfaction that the full 10 spot goes to charity. There will be special celebrity signed bulbs that are sure to go for outrageous prices. The good news is that each bulb comes with a certificate of authenticity AND a special box.

The Las Vegas sign has always been special to me as a landmark, and owning a piece of it could easily be special for many. But to know that YESCO goes out there daily to change the lights solely for this project kinda takes the excitement level down to almost boring. Most of the charities involved seem legit. I can't find out how much of the original amount is donated. All I can find is the upgrade part, and that wasn't easy to find.

Visit the website and see what you think. Would you pay $100 for a bulb that was in the sign less than 24 hours? I know that I have spent $100 on lesser objects. I can almost see getting one from my birthday as a souvenir, but it's so darn cheesy.

It's a hokey idea, that just might work. JMT, we're all Vegas nuts in one way or another here. I'll bet, more then one person here on this BB is thinking about ownership. If not for them selves, as a gift for that hard to buy for person...and the Holiday gift giving season is just around the corner!
Please let us not forget mood rings and pet rocks and alien area 51 licences....and they all where a hit.
Adding the charity angle to it, was a stroke of genius. It's deffenatly something no one NEEDS, yet, your doing good by purchasing it.
The logical side of my brain wants to rip this idea to shreads. But the truth is, people are going to buy.

David loves light bulbs - he collects light bulbs.

But I don;t think he would buy one of these.

But he is also cheap (I mean, uh thrifty with his money!)

Kes,
My sister breaks things down to how many more spins of the roulette wheel she could have if she doesn't buy a $5.75 orange juice in the morning each day of her vacation.
She is constantly telling me the price of a bottle of water, or how much a donut was at the bake stand in vegas. But she has no problem playing the blazing 7 machine for 4 hours????
My point is, it all depends on how you look at things.
I'll bet I could easily run a hundred through a VP machine, and loose it all, quicker then the time it would take for your husband to purchase a light bulb.....now who spent there money best??? At least he has something to show for is money!
smile
Here is another way to look at it, I can no longer play my age on a roulette table (only goes up to 36) But I could buy light bulb #48! LOL
Give me some time and I just might talk myself into a purchase....

Well we did spend forty bucks on a brick from Wrigley Field...I guess a yellow light bulb would look nice over that brick in its display case.
