Want to try RVing one way?
Want to try RVing one way?
I found this in one of my RV newsletters:

Rent an RV for $24 a night!
Cruise America has a deal for you if you're willing to travel from the Midwest to California or Nevada. The company will rent a limited number of brand new mini-motorhomes from their Midwest factories to either Los Angeles, San Francisco or Las Vegas. One way departures from South Bend, IN, start March 16 and from Franklin Park, IL, on March 23. A seven night minimum is required and costs $168, which includes 2,000 free miles. Many other special deals are also available. Learn more.
Here's the URL:
http://www.cruiseamerica.com/rent/hot_deals/

I have no affiliation with these people other than having rented an old beat up RV from them one time. These are brand new, and it could be fun if you've got the time.

HMMMMMMMMM........ I got the time. I like to drive. I like to sightsee. I like to smell the flowers along the way. There's a whole lot of country between those starting points and Las Vegas that I haven't seen.

It sounds like a win-win deal for both renters and CruiseAmerica.

Tater, any idea how much gas one would need for that kind of trip to Las Vegas for a medium size rig?

I think it said on the website that the small RV, which is what the special is for, gets about 14mpg. The larger the RV, the lower the milage. Our big 36 footer gasoline engine got about 8 mpg, and our little van Class B built on a Chevy 3500 Express platform gets about 16-18 mpg. Other variables apply, as usual...........weight of "stuff" an people (and in our case, dogs) inside, wind, etc, etc)

This sounds like a fun opportunity for someone with time.
But the problem the way I see it is logistics from a standpoint of what you need to do that kind of haul. I'm sure it would be killer prices to fly it all in with you. Stuff like fresh water hose, food, clothing, (I know what is needed for a week on a boat, ouch) although the gas milage is better then I expected on those campers.

I definitely read a bit more on this offer, even though it was a long shot.   That 7-day minimum comes with 2000 free miles, but the offer changes a wee bit after that - the daily rate goes up to $125, and mileage is 32 cents per mile.   There is no drop fee, and insurance is included.   The shortest trip (South Bend to LAS) is 1735, and the longest trip (South Bend to Oakland) is 2200 miles - assuming you took a straight freeway drive with no detours and not much in the way of sightseeing.  You have to put in a request; there are a limited number of vehicles; the offer can be withdrawn at any time, and travel must be completed by April 30th.   Even with all these restrictions, I agree with DAG that it is a helluva deal.  It's win-win; the company makes a little money and repositions the units, and the traveler could have a great trip for one-way fare, food, $128 and about 128 gallons of gas.  If I did something like this, those extra miles and days would add up - like I said, there's a lot of country I haven't seen.  :)
