For those of you who do not drink the Al Gore Kool-Aid, there is an event that will take place on March 28. At 8:30 pm, casinos along the strip will turn off their signs for one hour as a symbol to show they care about mother earth. There was an announcement this week under the Welcome to Las Vegas sign, where the mayor of Las Vegas along with his showgirls and the mayor Henderson declared the strip would take part in this global event.

In my opinion there are just a few things wrong with this picture. First of all, Jim Gibson and Oscar Goodman are not mayors of the area where the sign and the strip are located. They want to take credit for seemingly positive strip events but you can't find those suckers when there is bad news on the strip.

Secondly, turning off the lights on the strip has been and should be sacred to the history of Las Vegas. It should NEVER be a political pawn.

Third, that's not going to save a lot of energy. Even if you take the liberal's symbolism over substance approach, it doesn't pass. My new president couldn't even pass a bill to halt digital TV progress, which amazingly enough, would have wasted much more energy than shutting down strip signs for an hour.

Anyway, book your flights now to see a Las Vegas tradition fall victim to politics. BTW, as a former Republican and now a new born Obamican, I am very embarrassed by this event. I can think of lots of ways to save money and boost the economy without selling out what few values Las Vegas still has.
