I don't like their BBQ. I've had it when it was catered to my work for special events. It is cooked with a lot of sticky sauce and just isn't my kind of BBQ. It is popular with some people though.
As part of the KWMR dining discounts, I bought a couple of Memphis BBQ certificates. First of all, the KWNR dining deals is very legit. The gift certificates are printed by the restaurant, so there is no authentication questions. The ones I used were gladly accepted with no question.
Memphis BBQ has two specials that are not on their menu. Those are the two cases where I recently dined there. Both were very good meals.
First of all, they have prime rib on Fridays and Saturdays only. They have a 14 ounce cut for $19.99 that comes with a salad and two sides. There is a less expensive 10 ounce cut. I had the the 14 ouncer and it was pretty good. It was drier than a typical cut because of it's cooking method. It had a very nice light touch of smoke flavor as evidenced by it's cooking method. The meat was tender and flavorful as a good cut of meat should be. The salad was not out of a bag. Their side dishes range from straight from the can to overly engineered. I had two safe starches that are hard to screw up. The mac and cheese was basic and kid friendly. The fries were probably frozen and not bad. Since my coupon was $25 and the meal was $20, I added an apple crisp dessert that shouldn't be on my diet. It was pretty good and tasty and would have been better a la mode for another 50 cents.
The other special that is not on the menu is on Sunday nights when they have a family style fried chicken dinner. They bring out a basket of fried chicken and five bowls of fixins. There is a bowl of cole slaw, mashed potatoes and gravy, chicken and dumplings, green beans, and corn. And there are dinner rolls. The fried chicken had a very light and crisp batter on it and was sprinkled with their dry rub dust out of the fryer. The chicken was fresh, hot, moist, and delicious. I'm not a fan of cole slaw, the mashed potatoes and gravy were okay, the chicken and dumplings had a lot of dumplings and almost no chicken, the green beans were over engineered with bacon, onions, and several other things drowning out the taste of the beans, and the corn was just whole kernal corn from the can. Part of the deal is that you can ask for second helpings. They originally brought me out 2 breasts and a leg. When I asked for seconds, they brought me 1 breast. They said that was the max which was okay by me. I probably could have eaten more but I was really full. This was a fine meal at $11.99.
So if you like Memphis BBQ, here are two more reasons to go. If you don't like it, here are two reasons to give them another try. I'll be back to try both of these specials again and I'll probably order more KWNR coupons when they come up again.
There are 3 Memphis Championship BBQ locations in town. One is on Rainbow south of Charleston, one is near the Air Force Base between the Blvd, Craig, and Nellis, and the other is on Warm Springs near Eastern.
