I liked Harrah's in New Orleans, but I stayed at the Marriott both times I visited, even though Harrah's comped the room on my most recent trip. I think they finally finished their own hotel last year.
You won't find full-pay VP there, but it wasn't bad enough to chase me off either. I liked their buffet - lots of Cajun goodies to enjoy.
Another casino you might want to visit is the Treasure Chest in Kenner, very close to the NO airport-not to gamble but to eat. I only played there once when I was working in New Orleans, and I think their VP pay tables made Harrah's look good<g>, but they had an outstanding buffet. It was a small buffet by any standards, probably just a tad larger than the salad portion of most Las Vegas buffets - but it was loaded with good stuff! I remember things like seafood etouffee, stuffed bell peppers, collard greens that were outstanding, and they served thick slices of Cajun prime rib every night. LOL, it's probably the only casino I ever hit regularly to eat without even thinking about gambling. That was back in the days when the casino boats had to cruise at least a couple hours a day, and I didn't really care if the boat was there or not because the buffet was on dry land.

I have been to the now Horseshoe in Southern Indiana a number of times (mostly when it was Caesars since it only switched last summer).
It is along the Ohio River (hence riverboat casino) about 18 miles west of Louisville, Kentucky, 12 miles from I-64.
There are 3 sections: the actual casino which is on a boat in the river, the pavilion which is the entrance to the casino and has the buffet, the better restaurant, the entertainment room, a sports bar and a snack bar and gift shop and the hotel. The parking garage is built under the walkway from the hotel to the pavilion. The hotel is up the side of a hill so there is a fair climb from casino to hotel about a1/4 mile walk. There are people movers for about half the distance and they do have a shuttle service from pavilion to hotel.
The place was originally built as a Caesars and from the exterior still sort of looks that way. All in white concrete to look like marble, pillared front look, (from the front the hotel has an extreme resemblance to the Palace Tower at Caesars in Las Vegas). They have changed the interior to more go with the Horseshoe Theme. Renamed restaurants, renamed the boat (ex-Glory of Rome)changed carpet etc.
The boat has 4 levels- bottom is half poker room the balance is a snack bar and mostly penny slots. Deck 2 has a bar, a small restaurant mix of slot machines and video poker. poker is 8/5 at 5 cents, 9/5 at 25 cents and 9/6 at $1 and up. Some but not a lot of multi-play machines. Deck 3 is about 1/2 table games $10 and up min blackjack, let it ride, Caribbean stud, craps table, electronic roulette. The other half is slot machines penny to dollar. Deck 4 is about 1/2 high roller $5 and up slots and video poker, tables $100 and up. the other half is a bar and mostly $1 normal slots and nickel multiline video slots.
As casinos go I would rate it as looser than average for the Midwest.
The buffet used to be pretty good. The last time we went (about November) it was terrible. I mean worse than Old Country Buffet. I do not know if they were going through a bad stretch or whether this was part of the conversion process. I did notice that they had a big turnover of personnel to the new regime and the change was not an improvement.
The better restaurant was now Jack Binion's Steakhouse. It was OK as a steakhouse. Nothing bad, nothing special.
The hotel is about 10 stories. The regular rooms were regular. They would not be out of line for the mid range hotels in Vegas. They have some suites but I have not seen them. The view is either the power plant right across the river or the side of the hill. Neither worth paying extra for.
There is a enhanced snack bar near check-in that also is the room service kitchen. It was better than expectation. Good breakfast selection. The food was much better than the buffet.
All in all not a bad place to stop over. Avoid the buffet. Gambling is as good as you are going to see in the Midwest.
