Hi Folks
Can anyone give me an idea of cab fares to IP from the airport? Car rentals are outragious and we will only be there from Thursday night till monday night. Thrifty wanted $300 and Alamo the same. Or maybe there is a better alternative to taking a cab. I think we would be staying around the IP area anyway or jumping on the monorail if we wanted to go to the south end. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Probably $12-15 depending on the time of day. And that's without the tip. And tell them NOT to take the tunnel.

Leaving the airport will cost a few dollars more than going back as the airport takes a chunk of the tourist dollar upon arrival.

Ok Seems there is a change in plans. Terry was bummed out about not having a car. She really likes to travel out of town during the day so I gave in and booked Alamo at $228.00 ($298.00 canadian) Thurs 11:00pm - Monday 9:00pm. which was the cheapest I could find. But wait... (does that sound like the sham wow guy?)
I go to the airline website we fly with and see something about rental cars. I join some club they have and proceed to check out their prices. Hmm Dollar for the the same dates and times comes to $178.47 CANADIAN!!!
I am thinking there is something wrong here and there will be an added exchange rate or something. I call their 800 number and the guy assures me that that is the total with taxes and fees included. Unless I want a childs car seat or something when I get there that is the cost.
Ok, I cancelled Alamo and signed up. I am still a little sceptical but I figure it is still cheaper even if they do add an exchange rate. We will see how this works out.

I have to tell you how this got started. We had to cancel our trip for last week March 6th - 13th. There was business we had to look after yesterday and today. Instead I had booked Ceasars in Windsor for this weekend and yesterday I reminded her that there was no smoking in the casino. She isn't a happy camper. She says she would have rather went to vegas for the weekend than drive 4 hours to Windsor and back. That's all I needed to know. I jumped on the computer and here we are. grin

Some of the smart shoppers (not me) are known to double book or more throughout the planning stage, watching for the best rates. I think they do this for cars as well as hotel and airfares and maybe more items.

The problem that I would get into is keeping track of what I book and canceling the higher reservations within the free cancellation period.

Some of the ways to shop for car deals is direct on the internet, through your credit card or airline or other third party, and calling on the phone. Once you secure your best rate, start finding coupons from auto clubs, entertainment books, magazines, etc, then putting that on top of your best rate.

Another trick I used in the old days (I don't know if it still works) is to book a whole week for the car. Their weekly rates are often cheaper than select prime days. Then you turn the car in early and still pay for the full week. It's a win-win deal.

Car rates are crazy! One day down and 6 days up. We've rented from Dollar before, they are ok to rent from. I check at least once a week and they've been juggling cars and rates.

i know on the thrifty site they give you a timeline for the rates displayed and it's hours not days so once a week is not enough if you want a good rate.just booked for a july rate of 99 a week for a mid. in the past if thrifty day rates were less than weekly,i got a refund at turn-in time. i am about a twenty time renter from thrifty with good rates and no screw-ups,i am there till they do. i rarely check other sites for better rates.the new shuttle to the rentals is painless as is the dropoff.i am a sun thru thur renter.i don't know if that is a slow period or just lucky.

Thrifty has been decent to me lately, althought we did have some rough years, after I returned my car wrecked! LOL
But I am guessing everyone knows that Dollar & Thrifty are owned by the same? They just run the companies as two. Sort of like Alamo & National, although these 2 share buses and more.

there are no "company" buses anymore so you don't have to wait for your bus.i have never had to wait for a bus to take me to the rental place or wait for a bus to take me to the terminal. the only tip i have-don't rent a caliber!
