The only business to ever sustain business in Neonopolis will fade to black as it shows it's last picture show in the movie complex.
There's always been a stigma against downtown projects east of the FSE cage. It is very very slowly beginning to become accepted. The El Cortez has cleaned up it's act, the Gold Spike looks brand new, Fremont Street East is trying to find it's footing, so Neonopolis has a chance. After over 10 years of being unaccepted, it's time has come and it's a really bad time in the financial world.
The owners of the theater say that the owners of Neonopolis are not paying their air conditioning bills and as summer approaches, air conditioning is pretty much required. Plus, the theater has been picking up the tab for parking.
Neonopolis has a shadow of hope as Jillians trys to get going. The new Star Trek Experience that is coming to Neonopolis was rumored to be getting ready for a partial opening this month in time for a new Star Trek film. That rumor is squashed as they say they will wait and have a full opening in 2010.
The shadow of hope is overpowered by homeless, pan handlers, and the spooky feeling of so many unoccupied store fronts in the complex.
For those who have a soft spot for neon, Neonopolis is a gold mine. If you are brave enough to venture inside after dark, the neon signs are beautiful.
