It would seem counterproductive to come to Las Vegas on New Years and stay off the strip. The strip shuts down about 5pm, so at least your car needs to be parked by then. Most casinos on the strip issue wrist bands to their guests and lock out anyone else. If there are fireworks, they will probably be shot off the top floor of the major parking garages. There will be port-a-pottys and drink stands lined up and down the strip.
I suggest a strip hotel, somewhere between P-ho and Venerian. Have your car secured by noon. Remember that if you wander very far, you'll have to wander back since there is no vehicle traffic. So if you want to see Robbie Knevel jump a rock on the far end of the strip, you'll have to walk back to your host hotel. Basic rules for situational awareness in crowds is needed to avoid everything from pick pockets to someone elses body fluids. If you want dinner that night, make reservations early. Have snacks and drinks available in room. For cheap strip rooms, don't forget Casino Royale or IP.
IF you did stay off strip, I don't know what the parking situation would be. At some point, it will be room guests only. I don't know when they would let you back into the garage to get your car back. If you do get in, you're in for the long haul.
A friend that went last year told the story of buying a beer in one of those really tall plastic glasses. The problems was that it was so crowded that he couldn't turn the glass up to drink it without going to the edge of the barricade.
