My freebie show last week was Vickie Lawerence and Momma, a two woman show. which played at the Southpoint. I had a cheap seat, near the stage, but up a level and way off to the side.
Like most of us, Vickie isn't getting any younger. She spends a lot of time touring to speak to women's organizations about her life and womens health.
This show started with Vickie coming on stage and talking about her life. From high school, to how she met Carol, her first husband, and then she sang her one hit song. Then she talked about her life on the Carol Burnett show and how she met her second husband. After that she left the stage, it got dark, and some video clips from the Carol Burnett show and Mamma played.
When the last video clip ended, everyone applauded, and I felt a hand on my shoulder and someone said, "What are you clapping for? Don't give her attention or she'll never leave." It was Mamma.
She walked around a little bit, and got on stage and did a lot of Mamma. The first half was really good, then she started doing a lot of "old people whining" jokes, which were in character, but old. Like, why do people drive on a parkway and park in a driveway? Or, How come kids today....
Mamma finally left and Vickie came back and ended her show. She seemed like a really nice person, and I enjoyed the show. It was very entertaining. I particulary enjoyed the history of her and Carol and the antics backstage.
