My free show of the night was The Smothers Brothers. I honestly didn't know what to expect since I had not seen them since their TV show. The stage was very simple with just a guitar, a stand up bass, mics, and a few speaker monitors. I was curious that with such an empty stage there would be no Wow factor and they would have to rely on talent.
I was not disappointed. I laughed just as hard as I did 40 years ago. Tom played the scatterbrained guy with a guitar, and Dick played the straight man with a bass. Their jokes were somewhat fresh and their music was very good folk music. I think everyone had a good time. I knew their show was cancelled back in 1969. I guess never understood exactly why and that they held a very bad grudge against CBS. They laugh and make jokes about it now, and you can tell it was a very sore subject at one time.
The old boys still entertain quite well. They have been playing together over 50 years. They both look pretty good for their age. Tom has a little bit of "old man rasp" in his voice. They both sing and play music pretty well. Tom is also a great yo-yo player and they do a little yo-yo skit. I'd stop short of saying this is a must see act. I do think it would be an excellent entertainment choice in many situations, both in Las Vegas and other cities. If you ever laughed at the Smothers Brothers, you can expect about an hour and half of the same thing at this show. And they did it without a warm up act.
